Culpeper, VA THE COLVIN FAMILY Sarah Elizabeth Colvin (SEC) is the paternal great, great grandmother of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas. The direct bloodline is as follows: Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas I Amber Dawn Deaton Haas I Lonnie Dale Deaton I Bernice “Bernie” Deaton I Sarah Elizabeth Colvin PREFACE: Most likely the first person with the surname “Colvin” to arrive in America was a certain John Colvin who came to from England to Dartmouth, MA, between 1679 and 1700. He moved to Providence, RI, shortly afterward, probably about the year 1705. In that year he bought three hundred acres of land near Providence, and in the following year he bought more land near Nashantatack, on the north side of the Pawtuxet River. He married “Dorothy” ca 1697 and fathered nine children—Anna, John, Stephen, Abigail, Samuel, Amey, Deborah, James, and Josiah. Stephen and Josiah are believed to have died very young and without offspring. John married a 2nd time ca 1726 to a Mary Keach. She bore him no children. John died in 1729. This first immigrant named John Colvin had a son, John Colvin Jr. John Jr., made his home in Scituate, RI. He was the father of eight children by his first wife “Lydia.” These children were Jonathan, Lydia, Charity, Stephen, John Hopkins, Matthew, and Jeremiah. He 2nd married the widow Mary Lapham Dyer in 1734. He 3rd married “Margaret” ca 1757. Samuel, third son of John Colvin the immigrant, also lived in around Providence and Coventry, RI. He seems to have fathered by his wife “Phebe” the following children—Thomas, Daniel, Abigail, Joseph, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Susannah, Richard, Content, Phebe, Rufus, and Samuel. James, the fourth son of John the Immigrant, was also of resident of Providence and Coventry. He fathered the following children—Benjamin, Caleb, Moses, Josiah, Stephen, John David, Henry, and Anne. Our line of Colvins finds its roots in Culpeper County, Virginia. As of the year 2000, your author has not been able to specifically identify a connection between the Virginia Colvins and the Colvins of Rhode Island. It is known that many of the Colvins of Virginia served in the Revolutionary War (Henry, George, Mason, James, Jeremish, Elkin, Lowther), including our Benjamin. THE MEANING OF THE SURNAME “COLVIN”: The name of COLVIN is said by some historians to be of ancient Anglo-Saxon origin and derived from one “Colvin” or “Colvinus,” who was a “tenant-in-chief,” of Devonshire, England, in the early eleventh century. It was first used as a personal or baptismal name by the sons of the before mentioned Colvin or Colvinus. Some insist, however, that the name is Scottish in origin. More recent scholarship[ points to a Norman origin derived from “de Colleville.” Guillaume de Colleville and Gilbert de Colleville were both knights who served in William the Conqueror’s invasion forces, thought it is not clear that these de Collevilles are related to the Colvins. At any rate, the names are closely associated. An American example may be found at Colvin’s Mill in Virginia. The original mill was established by a Coleville in the 1700's, but the name was changed to “Colvin” sometime later. In the ancient British and early American records the name is found in the various forms of Colven, Colvine, Colvyne, Colwyne, Colwin, Colvan, and Colvin. The last mentioned spelling is the most generally used in American today. In England, the Colvins resided chiefly in Devon (the same area from which the Deatons came), but later settled in London before the beginning of the eighteenth century. Of this line, a certain Jane Colvin was married at St. James, Clerkenwell, in 1733 to Thomas Brewer. Elsdon C. Smith, author of “New Dictionary of American and Family Names,” reports that the name “Colvin is of Scottish and Irish descent and means “bold or great hero... The name also refers to one who came for Collerville in Normandy... a descendent of Ceolevine (ship, friend).” GENERATION FIVE: SARAH ELIZABETH COLVIN: Sarah Elizabeth Colvin (SEC) was born 2-3-1882 in Cooke Co., TX, and married “Will” Deaton on 8-6-1898 in Van Zandt Co., TX. SEC was always called “Sally.” She died 5-6-1970 at 10:45am in Memorial Hospital, Modesto, Stanislaus Co., CA. SEC’s father , William Henry Colvin, died 1892/1893 and about this time her mother, Nancy Rebecca Hollis Colvin, moved her family to Van Zandt Co., TX. In 1893, Nancy departed Texas for Oklahoma leaving SEC behind. She was hired out (apprenticed?) to a family in Van Zandt Co., and remained with this family until she married “Will” Deaton. It is not known why Nancy choose to leave Sally behind but took her other children with her to Oklahoma. Sally and “Will” eventually followed and were in Oklahoma by 1901. They were part of the “Okie & Arkie” western migration depicted in John Steinbeck’s “Grapes of Wrath.” They first settled in New Mexico and later moved to California (before 1944). In 1970, Sally was residing at Rt. I, Box 600, Sonora, CA. Her SSN was 525-05-6627. She had been a housewife all of her life. She died of uremia and pneumonia and “senility.” She is buried in the Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery in Modesto. Her attending physician was Reldon R. Jones. The undertaker was S.J. Jarock. The informant for the death certificate information was David Deaton. What had brought “Will” Deaton to Van Zandt Co., TX, is unknown but it was there that he met and married Sally. Their marriage was recorded by J. P. DuBose, county clerk. The Deputy clerk was F.B. Fowler. CHILDREN OF SARAH ELIZABETH COLVIN DEATON: I. As of 2000, his grave had not been located. Family oral history has him being shot and killed in a dispute with a neighbor. One must wonder if this story is not being confused by the family with the story of his father’s death. William did have a reputation for moving a lot. He was a “teacher” and farm laborer. In the 1860 census of Boone Co., Mo., WHC is recorded as living at home with his parents in HH 286. In 1870, still in Boone Co., MO., he is recorded as living with his uncle, W.H. Dennis, in HH 66. By this time both his parents were deceased. Mr. Dennis was appointed his guardian on 2-3-1871.William left Boone Co., MO, before 1880 (possibly with his uncle, Henry Colvin) and married Nancy Rebecca Arminta “Mittie” Hollis on 12-15-1878 in Cooke Co., TX. Henry Colvin married in TX, and appears in the 1880 census of Wise Co., TX. . Nancy was the daughter of James Madison Hollis and Sarah Satterwhite. “Elder William H. Daniel” performed the wedding ceremony. The court clerk who recorded the marriage was E.F. Bunch. Nancy was born 3-15-1860 in Harrison Co., TX, and died 9-30-1945 in Dill City, OK. According to her death certificate (State File NO. 156, Reg. NO. 24), she died of heart failure. She was also suffering from skin cancer of the nose. The date of her death was 9-30-1945, 6am. The death certificate informant was Mrs. W.D. Heatley. His father (Major William) served in the French and Indian Wars and “saw service and furnished supplies in the Revolutionary War.” It is likely that John served during the Revolutionary Was but there is no documentation of his service. There is no record of him purchasing property until 1786 when he bought 167 acres in Brumfield Parish in the fork of the Rappahanock River on the branches of the Butler Swamp from a certain Charles Halloway. He sold this land to a John Mason in 1794, perhaps in anticipation of his migration to Kentucky. He likely played a major part in organizing the family expedition to Kentucky. The move, according to oral family history, was the result of the family’s involvement in the Methodist Revival Movement and their efforts to establish a community that was supportive of their religious beliefs. The party consisting of almost the entire William Lightfoot family including wives and children, and grandchildren would have numbered about 60 persons. Their family bible undoubtedly accompanied them and has never been recovered or registered with the Lightfoot Association or any recognized genealogical agency. The only subsequent records relating to John Barrow Lightfoot are based on correspondence between his sister Frances in KY, writing to her brother Phillips in VA. It is recorded that John B. If you, dear reader, are a member of the Colvin clan then one of your ancestors, Benjamin Colvin, fought in the American Revolution. Benjamin, like Ezekiel Billington, believed in the American dream and fought to establish “a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” Both men eventually were awarded with Revolutionary War pensions for their service. The Colvins of Virginia eventually migrated to Kentucky and Missouri, and then on the Texas and Oklahoma. The reasons for their migration are unclear. What drew Benjamin Colvin’s branch of the family to Boone Co., MO, is also unknown. Why his great grandson, William Henry Colvin, migrated to Texas is likewise unknown. It is known that a great deal of tragedy followed this family. Doyle Colvin was killed in a drunken brawl in Boone Co, Mo. Oral family history also has his son, William Henry Colvin (1st husband of Nancy Rebecca Hollis) being killed in a fight with a neighbor. William Colvin did die as a young man, probably in Montague Co., TX., but the cause of his death and the place of his burial has never been documented. Eventually William’s widow, Nancy Rebecca, and her children ended up in Washita and Kiowa Cos., OK. There, Nancy gave birth to Luther Thompson. Oral history has it that Luther was never accepted by the Colvins and he did report to his children that he felt rejected and mistreated by the them. Your author truly hopes that was not the case. It is known that the Colvins held positive feelings for the Deatons (Sarah Elizabeth Colvin married “Will” Deaton). Your author’s father, Bernie Deaton, often visited with “Lon” and Otto Colvin. On one occasion “Lon” Colvin loaned Bernie Deaton money. Although it is not confirmed, LDD believes this was occasioned by Bernie and Amanda Griffitts Deaton’s need for money to participate in the great “Grapes of Wrath” western migration. Your author never had the opportunity to become acquainted with any of the Colvins. That is most regrettable. It, no doubt, would have been most informative and rewarding to be able to ask them (the Colvins) how William Henry Colvin died, about James Franklin “Frank” Thompson, and about their relationship with Luther Thompson. At any rate, the Colvins made a substantial contribution to the ancestral heritage of “Alex” & “Zack” Haas. Sarah Elizabeth Colvin bore nine children and her grandson eventually wrote the family history you are now reading. Three cheers for the Colvins!!. APPENDIX a1,2. The Colvin Coat of Arms. a3,4.
