AMBROSE POWELL, born in Culpepper county, Va., November 9, 1825. Graduated at West Point 1847. Made second-lieutenant August 27, 1847. Served a short time in Mexican war, and then in Florida. Assistant to coast survey, 1855, with rank of captain. Colonel 13th Virginia regiment at breaking out of Civil war, and assigned to duty at Harper's Ferry. Fought under Johnston at first battle of Bull Run, and earned title of brigadier. Made major-general after battle of Williamsburg. Prominent in the series of engagements that drove McClellan from the Peninsula. Attached to Jackson's forces and fought in the battles of Cedar Mountain, second Bull Run, and Chantilly. On September 17, 1862, received surrender of Union forces at Harper's Ferry and by forced marches relieved Lee at Antietam. Held right of Confederate forces at Fredericksburg December 13, 1862, and repulsed Union forces. Participated in flank movement at Chancellorsville, that crushed Hooker's forces. Wounded in this action. May 20, 1863, promoted to lieutenant-general. Fought at Gettysburg, as corps commander, July, 1863, and at Bristow's Station October, 1863. Commanded Petersburg during the siege 1865, and on April 2, 1865, was shot while reconnoitering.
