HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This cemetery is very bleak, having only one tree to cover it and a wire fence to keep the stock off the graves. There are two graves here, one of them being we believe, the grave of the wife of Capt. Davenport, one of the founders of the town of Culpeper. The inscriptions are as follows: To the memory of Eleanor wife of Birket DAVENPORT who departed this life the 6th day of May 1790 Aged 38 yrs Had issue three daughters Susannah, Elizabeth & Eleanor To the memory of Susannah the wife of Philip Rootes THOMPSON who in the zenith of life fell a victim to a cancer in the breast, the most painful of all diseases. After it had baffled the utmost efforts of human skill, she died on the ninth day of December, 1798, aged 50 yrs. Passion and pride were to her soul unknown Convinced that nature only is our own So unaffected, so composed in mind So firm yet so strong yet so refined. Heaven as its purest gold by torture tried The saint sustained it but the woman died. These stones are both large flat ones covering the whole grave. 7. ART: None. 8. SUBJECT: Dowlman Tomb 2. LOCATION: 2 miles east of LaGrange, Va., on north side of #610 3. DATE: 1799 4. OWNERS: Unknown 5. DESCRIPTION: None. 6. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: We found on the Madden estate an old tomb which though unmolested by the owners of the land about it, is in rather bad condition. In the midst of a field, it is alone in its protection of the dead. Just why it is where it is we can only conjecture. There was at one time a church of some importance, it being one of the three first churches in St. Mark's Parish, a few hundred yards from where this tomb was located. This tomb then may be the last of the graveyard which may have lain back of it, as was the custom in old churches. Some people are of the belief that this may have been the church attended by Lady Spotswood but, as yet we cannot prove that. There is a huge slab covering the tomb which was at one time built up underneath with bricks. Now it is so sunken into the ground that all that can be seen is the top slab and a few of the bricks. A corner of the slab is broken away and some of the words are undecipherable. A copy of the remaining inscription is: "----------n Esq. of Lancaster Co. who -----e 2nd. day of Sept. 1799, aged --------g. A wife, 3 sons and 7 daughters ------------ their lots." The old woman who showed us the tomb, an intelligent and educated negro, told us that they had always been told that the name was Dowlman. She thought that the older people who had lived there had read it before the corner of the stone was broken off. 7. ART: None 8. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Mrs. T. O.
