Thompson Cemetery Location: 1 mile west of Culpeper, Virginia, on the north side of Route #3. Culpeper County In 1904 the town of Culpeper bought a lot of four acres of land next to the original part of the cemetery, from Mr. E.P. Duncan. In 1923 the town bought another piece of forty acres from the Peter Smith estate. Later the part not suitable for graves, nineteen acres, was sold off. The town of Culpeper now owns the cemetery. This shady cemetery included about thirty acres. It is divided into sections by driveways, and these sections into smaller lots by corner posts and walkways. The grass is kept out and the shubbery and trees well trimmed so that it has an attractive appearance. All of the graves are leveled off and the stones kept straight. Down the middle the old part extends back to the Confederate Mound which has a tall monument on top of it. There are many large trees scattered through the cemetery. The oldest graves in this cemetery were made before the War Between the States, but it is not known if this was private property or a public cemetery. It is not known when the town came into possession of the land. The following inscriptions were taken from these stones: Our Father John W. Smith Jan. 1, 1842 - Jan. 17, 1904 Surely he hath bourne our griefs and carried our sorrows and now at rest Our Mother Martha E. Smith Jan. 28, 1836 - Sept. 25, 1914 T. H.
