Culpeper County This cemetery was at first only one acre in area. However it has been added to at different times until now there are seven and one tenth acres incorporated in it. Enclosed by a stone fence with an iron one on top of it, this quiet spot is well suited for a cemetery. Heavy iron gates give admittance to a circular driveway which winds out at other iron gates. Large trees shade the graves and there is a deep sward of grass to cover them. There are some large shrubs and some flowering bushes and a few smaller ones. The grass is well kept and the trees are kept trimmed. The whole place shows constant care. This Masonic Cemetery is said to be the only one in the state which is restricted to the families of Masons. At first this was not true of it, but as the graveyard became filled up and core land had to be purchased, the people who had no claim on the Masons were excluded from burial here. Now only those people who are members of some Mason’s family may be buried here. The first acre of land for use as a Masonic Cemetery was given to the Fairfax Lodge by General Edward Stevens, himself a Mason and a benefactor of all Masons. He had already given the lodge the lot and building in the town of Fairfax (now Culpeper) in which they held their meetings. The land was adjoining the Stevens family burying ground then, but the Stevens lot is incorporated in the Masonic Cemetery now. The members of this family have large flat stones over their graves. The inscriptions are as follows: In memory of General Edward Stevens who died Aug. the 17th 1820 at his seat in the county of Culpeper in the 76th year of his age. This gallant officer and upright man had served his country with reputation, in the field and senate of his native state. He took an active part and had a principal share in the war of the Revolution and acquired great distinction at the Battles of Great Bridge, Brandywine & Germantown, Camden, Guilford Courthouse & seige of Yorktown and although zealous in the cause of American freedom, his conduct was not marked with the least degree of malevolence or party spirit. Those who honestly differed from him in opinion he always treated with singular tenderness. In strict integrity, honest patriotism and immovable courage, he was surpassed by none, and had few equals. Sacred to the memory of Gilly Stevens Widow of General Edward Stevens, and daughter of Robert Coleman, Esquire who died Dec. 4th, 1820 at her residence in Culpeper County in the 74th year of her age. Such was the benevolence of this lady that she was never known to speak ill of her neighbor. Possessing an ample fortune she used the bounties of Providence in despensing blessing to the poor and destitute. She was a devoted wife, Affectionate mother, an indulgent and humane mistress, a kind neighbor and pious Christian. It is believed that when her pure spirit left this for a better world, she had no enemy on earth and all who knew her lamented her departure. Sacred to the memory of John Stevens son of General Edward & Gilly Stevens who died February 8th, 1820 at his seat in the County of Culpeper in the 55th year of his age. He was an affectionate husband, indulgent master, a kind neighbor, and an honest upright man. His death was much lamented by an extensive circle of friends and relatives. Sacred to the memory of Edward Stevens, Jr. son of General Edward & Gilly Stevens who died March 14, 1795 in the County of Culpeper in the 22nd year of his age. His polite and easy behavior insured distinction in every society. The warmth of his heart gained the affection of his friends. His sincerety their confidence and esteem. Few persons ever died more lamented by their friends and neighbors. To his family & near relatives his death was a stroke most severe. Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Stevens Daughter of General Edward & Gilly Stevens who died in the year 1780 age 2 years Sacred to the memory of Mary Stevens daughter of William Williams and wife of John Stevens who departed this life on the 11th day of May 1828 in the sixty-third year of her age. Beloved and regretted for her exemplary piety and benevolence. Robert S. Lewis, M.D. May 17, 1830 Nov. 28, 1897 By his friends.
