All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Patricia Kirkman kkirkm@hotmail.com September 4, 2013, 3:57 pm Pension Application State of Ohio Licking County On the thirteenth day of March one thousand eight hundred and thirty three personally appeared before me, Samuel Bancroft, one of the judges of this court of common pleas in and for the County and State aforesaid, John Priest, a resident of Fallsbury Township in the county and state aforesaid.. aged eighty-two years who being first duly sworn personally to law doth on this oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th, 1802, that he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and service as herein stated: (Col. name not recollected) Major Williams, adjutant Wm. Broadis. Capt. Henry Monroe, Lieut. James Purvis. Entered the service in the month of April 1778 according to the best of his recollection, and served six months and left the service in the month of October of the same year. He entered the service within about two miles of residence -- was drafted for six months – the company to which he belonged met at Culpepper Court House and then marched to Brandywine Mills where by General Washington’s orders they were stationed to guard the Mills and continued there until discharged. – He also states that he has no documentary evidence and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service – he states he was born in Prince William County, Virginia in the year 1750. He has now no record of his age – he has lived since the Revolutionary War in Culpepper County, Virginia until about twenty-two years ago when he moved to the state of Ohio where he now lives - does not recollect that he ever received a written discharge. He also states that he is known in his present neighborhood to Abraham Day and Isaac Norman who can testify as to his character for veracity and their belief of his service as soldier of the revolution. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed before me John X Priest on the day and year aforesaid his mark Samuel Bancroft Associate Judge We, Wormwood Marriott, residing in the county of Licking and the state of Ohio, and Abraham Day, residing in the county of Knox and state of Ohio, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with John Priest who has -?- and sworn to the above declaration that we believe him to be eighty two years of age, that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and we concur in that opinion. Sworn to and subscribed before me the day and year aforesaid Samuel Bancroft Associate Judge And I -?- Samuel Bancroft do hereby declare that my opinion is after the investigation of the matter and after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the War Department that the above named applicant was a revolutionary soldier and served as he states and I do further certify that it appears to me that Homewood Marriott and Abraham Day who has signed the preceding certificate are creditable persons and that their statement is entitled to credit and I do also certify that the applicant cannot from bodily infirmity attend the court.
