His wife was Elizabeth WARD of Culpeper co VA. Revolutionary War Pension Records for Medley Shelton (Film 972168) Medley Shelton , Virginia, W8717. Wife Elizabeth Kentucy Elizabeth, widow of Medley Shelton, who was a private in the Revolution. Inscribed in the roll at the rate of $60/yr to commence 4 March 1843. Certificate of pension issued the 13th day of Jan 1844 and sent to CW Trabue, Frankfort, Kentucky Recorded in Book A vol 1 p 173 Medley Shelton Oct 6 1854 Death date not on AB. 15934 KENTUCKY Medley Shelton, Gallatin co in the state of Kentucky who was a private in the regiment commanded by Colonel Gaskins of the Virginia [unreadable] for the term of ten months. Inscribed on the roll of Kentucky at the rate of 8 Dollars per month, to commence on the 25 of October, 1819 Certificate of Pension issued the 25 of Nov 1819 and sent to N Sawyer, Esqr Frankfort Kentucky Arrears to the 4th of March 1820 34.8 "Medley Shelton and his wife Elizabeth was married 14 October 1783 BIRTHS Jacob Shelton was born 25 October 1784 Mary Shelton was born 24 Feb 1788 Anna Shelton was born 26 April 1790 John B Shelton was born 11 June 1796 Medley Shelton was born 13 October 1798 "I Robert Shelton of the County of Woodford and State of Kentucky as ???? that Medley Shelton mentioned in the ??? paper him to ????? is a brother of mine that we both in the year 1781 lived in Culpeper county in the State of Virginia - there he the said Medley Shelton some time in the year 1781 enlisted as a private soldier in the service of the United States to serve eighteen months and enlisted into one of the Continental companies belonging to the Virginia line, but who his Captain was I do not now recollect-that I saw him in the two or three times during the said eighteen months and that he served out the said eighteen months and was honorably discharged. [Not dated] "Edina, Knox County Missouri, September 2nd 1854 Commisioner of Pensions Dear Sire, I am informed that there is due my father Medley Shelton decd of Carrol County State of Kentucky or his widow Elisaebth Shelton of the same place now deceased arrears for his pension as a Revoluntionary soldier. Fi there is anything due their heirs either in land or money you would do me a great favor by informing me. Direct to me Medley Shelton Edina Knox County Missouri. By do doing you will ??y me under many obligations. I remain your abt sut Medley Shelton PS Medley Shelton decd was a soldier in Captain Reuben Fields Company-of 4th Regimenet of the Virginia Troops-Commanded by Cl Thomas Gaskins (Revolutionary War) State of Kentucky Carroll County On this 14th day of October 1843 personally appeared before the subscriber, a justice of the peace in and for said County and State aforesaid, Mrs Mary Blessing aged 54 years, the 24 day of February 1843, who being duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following statement - that she is the Daughter of Medley and Elizabeth Shelton and that the record purporting to be his, has been in the possession of the said Mary Blessing for the last thirty years. She further more declares that she always understood the Record to be in the handwriting of John Lets. She further declares thta she has often seen the money her father the above said Medley Shelton received as pension. Mary Blessing Attst E B Campbell Sworn to and subscribed before me a justice of the peace in and for the County a foresaid and I further certify that I know the said Mrs Mary Blessing to be of undoubted truth and veracity in witness whereof I have ??? unto and subscribed my name this 14th day of October 1843 State of Kentucky Carroll County on this 14th day of October 1843 personally appeared before the subscriber a justice of the peace in and for said County and State aforesaid, William Tandy aged 72 who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following statement-That he has known Mrs Mary Blessing the daughter of Medley and Elizabeth Shelton about fifty years and that Medley Shelton and Elizabeth Shelton were living together at that time and Remained to live as man and wife untill the death of Medley Shelton, which took place on the Eleventh day of March Eighteen hundred and thirty nine leaving Elizabeth Shelton, his widow. He says he was well acquainted with the first son of Medley and Elizabeth Shelton and know him to be 60 years of age. Declaration In orer to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress of the 7th July 1838 Entitled an Act granting half pay and pension to certain widows State of Kentucky, Carroll County "on this six day of June 1843 personally appeared before the subscriber a justice of the peace in and for Carroll County Kentucky, Mrs Elizabeth Shelton aged ninety the 14th day of August 1843 who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed 7th July 1838 Entitled an act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows that she is the widow of Medley Shelton who was a soldier and belonged to the regular service and was engaged in the battles of Gilford Camden Eutawsprings and nintey six. She can not speak confidentally as to the company he belonged with but she knows he served a large portion of the war as their marriage contract existed before he entered the service. She can not speak with more prisision as to his particular services and for them she must refer to the records of the County she further declares that she was married to Medley Shelton on the 14th day of October 1783 and that the aforesaid Medley Shelton died on the 10th day of March 1839 that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first of January seventeen hundred and ninety four via at the time above stated Attst: Greenup Whitehead Elizabeth Shelton Sworn to ans subscribed on the day and year above written before me a justice of the peace in and for the county and state aforesaid and I further certify that Mrs Elizabeth Shelton is from old age and bodily infirmity unable to attend Court in witness whereof I have unto set my hand this 3rd day of June 1843 Bartlett Seary JP Gallatin County Court April term 1821 ?This day Medley Shelton senior appeared in Open Court and having been first sworn made a declaration and statement in writing to wit: Fourth Judicial District of Kentucky, Gallatin county On this seventeenth day of April 1821 personally appeared in Open Court being a court of record proceeding according to the course of the common law with a jurisdiction unlimited in point Op?m??nt having ???ver of fine and imprisonment, Medley Shelton aged sixty three years resident in sd county who being first=duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the revolutionary war as follows. He enlisted in Culpeper County, State of Virginia in the month of March 1781 in the company commanded by Captain Reuben Fields belonging to Col. Thomas Gaskins regiment of the Virginia Continental line and that he continued to Serve in said Corps or the service of the United States until the latter end of the Summer of 1782 and that he was marched and counter marched through Virginia North Carolina South Carolina and Georgia untill the month of November 1782 and was discharged at Cumberland Courthouse in the State of Virginia. He was in the battle of Yorktwon and has been placed on the pension list roll of the United States under the law passed 18 March 1818 by certificate bearing date 25th day of November 1819 No. 15934. And I do solemnly swear that I'm as a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with the intenet thereby do to diminish it as to bring myselft within the provisions of an act of passed 18th March 1818 entitled an act for the benefit of certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States during the revolutionary war-and that I have not nor any in trust for me any property or securities contracts or debts due to me not have I any income other that what is contained in the schedule hereto Ann??ed and by me subscribed: Sixty acres of Land in Gallatin County at $1.20 per acre $90.00 Two cows and two calves at 10 cents 10.00 One Horse sixteen years old 10.00 Thirteen sheep at $1.00 13.00 One son $2.. and 15 shoats 75 cents 13.25 One pot 7. one kettle 4. One old table four chairs 6.00 One old bureau 4.00 One axe $1.00 one old plough $1.50 and two old hoes 3.50 I owe debts to amount of $75-- $149.75 I have a helpless wife and no Children Medley Shelton Sworn to an declared on before me Henry Davidge Judge of the Circuit Court for the fourth Judicial District at Kentucky this 17th day of April 1821. Henry Davidge, Judge I William Winslow Clerk of the said Court do hereby certify that the foregoing oath and the Schedule thereto annexed are truly copied from the records of the said Court and I do further certify that it is the opinion of the said Court- that the total amount in value of the property exhibited in the aforesaid Schedule is One hundred forty nine Dollars and seventy five cents. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of the said Court on this 30th day of May Eighteen hundred and Twenty One. Will. Winslow, Clerk of the Court of the Co of Gallatin State of Kentucky Franklin County On this twenty fifth day of October A.D. 1819 before me Samuel McKee one of the Circuit Judges of the said State of Kentucky allotted to the 4th Judicial District, personally appeared Medley Shelton aged fifty nine years resident in the County of Gallatin in the said State who being first duly sworn accoding to Law doth on this oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late Act of Congress, entitled "An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land and Naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary war" - Then he the said Medley Shelton enlisted in March 1781 in Culpeper county in the State of Virginia as a private soldier to serve eighteen months in Capt Reuben Fields Company belonging to Col Thomas Gaskins Regiment in the Virginia Continental line-that he continued in service in aid Corps or in the service of the United States until November 1782 when he was discharged from the service in Cumberland Old Court House in the State of Virginia; - that he was in the following battles and skirmishes, to wit the battle in Old James Town and the Siege of Yorktown, - the Skirmish on Bufords Bluff in South Carolina with the British and Indians and likewise in a Skirmish with the English and Indians in Savanna in Georgia- that he has served more than nine months; - that he is in reduced circumstances and needs the assistance of his County for support-that he has no other wid??? of his land ?????? in his power excepting what ?? have to annexed and that he has never received any pension either from the Government of the United States or any of them Samuel McKee In 1936 letter from the National Archives to someone making inquiry about Medley Shelton's service record: Medley Shelton was in the Battle of "Old Jamestown", the Siege of Yorktown and in skirmishes near Burford's Bluff in South Carolina and near Savannah, Georgia. He was discharged from service Nov 1782 at Cumberland Old Court House in Virginia. He was allowed pension on his application which was executed 25 October 1819 at which time he resided in Gallatin county KY, then aged 59. In 1824 he moved to Carroll county Ky, Post office Port William. He died 10 March 1839 in Carroll co Ky. He married his wife Elizabeth 14 October 1783. She was born 14 August 1753.
