Will of Thomas Brown 

Dec. 27, 1813:  Proved Culpeper Co, VA Feb 21, 1814 WB “G” p. _____

 

In the name of God amen I Thomas Brown of the County of 

Culpeper being sick and weak but of perfect mind and memory do

make and ordain this my last will and Testament to wit

      

I leave and bequeath to my beloved wife Dicey Brown during her 

natural life all my estate both real and personal and after her decease 

It is my will and desire that my son Thomas on paying fifty pounds 

thence have my slave Gaton my son George on the payment of the like 

sum of fifty pounds to have my slave Tom and my son William on 

the payment of the like sum of fifty pounds to have my women slave 

Usler and it is my will and desire that the residue of my estate be 

equally divided between my children Mary Sisson William Brown 

Thomas Brown Sally Bailey Susanna Brown Elizabeth Sisson Anna 

Bailey George Brown and Frances Brown Except only one mulatto 

slave named Judah which I leave to my daughter Susanna and in 

case of my negro women Usler not having another child it is my 

will that my daughter Susannah pay my daughter Fanny or  

Frances one half of the valuation of the said slave Judah but in 

case Usler should have another child to live it is my will that my 

daughter Frances shall have it and that her sister Susannah 

should not be subjected to pay her any thing for Judah

     

     I leave and appoint my wife Dicey Brown Executrix to this my

 last will and testament  In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 

my hand and seal this 27th day of December one thousand and eight 

hundred and thirteen

At a Court held for CULPEPER County the 17th day of Jany 1814

       This Last Will and Testament of Thomas Brown dec’d 

was exhibited to the court and proved by the oaths of George 

Wallis and William Lovell two of the witnesses thereto and ordered 

to be recorded  And at a court held for same County the 21st day of 

February 1814 On the motion of Dicey Brown the Executrix therein 

named Certificate is granted her for obtaining a probal thereof in due 

form she having made oath thereto And given Bond and  security
