The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net ******************************************************************************** Will: John Vanter, Culpeper Co, VA (1748) IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I John Vanater of Essex County being in perfect sense and memory make this my last will & testament.  First, my will is that all my personal estate as well in Orange and in Essex County be not appraised but sold at auction by my Executors hereafter named and also my outstanding debts collected in out of which sume they pay all my just debts and the remainder to be distributed as follows (viz): That one third part be my loving wife's, Margaret Vanter, the rest to be equally divided amongst my children, namely: Winifred, Bartholamew, Richard, Margaret, Angus, and David Vanter. Secondly, what land I have I lend as follows: that is to say, all the land I purchased of Young Hankins Jr and to my loving wife Margaret during her natural life with a piece of Kings Land survey'd by Maj. Robert Brock to be included by a doubble pattent in all by estimation one hundred & fifty acres, she making no waste nor sale of any of the appurtenances thereon and after her decease my will is that it be my son Bartholomew Vaanter's and his heirs forever, he paying therefore to my son Angus Vanter twenty pounds current money and to son David Vanter fifty pounds current money. Thirdly, I give to my daughter Winefred Vanter one hundred & thirty acres of land which was given me by my father in law David Noel, to her and her heirs forever. Fourthly, I give to my daughter Margaret Rucker one hundred & fifty acres of land at the Great Mountains that which leys most convenient to her, to her and her heirs forever. Fifthly, My will is that the remainder of the tract being five hundred acres be equally divided by an east west line in two parts and I give my son Richard Vanter his choise of the said parts to him and his heirs forever.  The other part of the said tract I give to my son Angus Vanter to him and his heirs forever. Sixthly, I give to my son David Vanter three hundred and eighty acres of land adjoining to the Old Otfue? Tract in Orange County to him and his heirs forever. Lastly, I constitute and appoint my loving wife Margaret and my son Bartholomew Vanter Executrix and Executors of this my Last Will and Testament. IN TESTIMONY whereof I have hereunto set my hand and fixt my seal this the twenty third day of May one thousand seven hundred forty and eight.                                                     John Vanter/L.S./ Signed & seal, publish'd & declar'd in presence of: Edward Vanter Elizabeth Vanter Samuel Vanter                    At a Court held for the County of Culpeper                      Thursday, the 16th day of November 1752 This Last Will and Testament of John Vanter, dec'd, was this day exhibited into court by Margaret Vanter and Bartholomew Vanter, the Executors therein named; the said Bartholomew being heir at law to the Decedent and declaring that he had no objection to make against it, the same was proved by the oaths of Edward Vanter and Elizabeth Vanter, witnesses thereto and sworn to by the said Executors and ordered to be recorded, they having given security according to law, and on their motion, Certificate is granted them for obtaining a Probat thereof in due form.                                                       Teste:                                                       Roger Dixon, Cl.Cur.
