I John Simpson of Culpeper County in the Colony of Virginia being through the abundant mercies and Goodness of God in perfect sound sense & memory blessed be his holy name, but calling to mind the uncertainty of this life and the Certainty of death, do therefore make ordain Constitute and appoint this to be my last will and Testament and desire it may be received by all as such, utterly revokeing all other will or wills by me heretofore made and confirmed this only. Imprimis I humbly bequeath my soul to God who gave it to me Humbly beseeching his most gracious Acceptance of it when I come to him for mercy through the all sufficient Merits & Mediation of my blessed Redeemer Jesus Christ my Lord & Saviour Amen. Item I give body to the earth from whence it was Taken to be buried by my wife & Executors in a decent Christian like manner in full assurance of its Resurrection at the last day. Item My will and desire is that all my Just debts be fully Punctually settled & paid. Item I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Elisabeth Simpson the Tract of Land and plantation whereon I now live together with the household Furniture, stock of horses Cattle hogs & sheep, and four Negroes Namely Charles Jo Solomon & Charity During her widowhood but if she marries again or die then all such Moveable Estate of Negroes be Equally Divided among my four sons Namely William James Alexander and John Simpson. Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Elenor Booton my Negro wench Winny her and her Increase to her and her heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Burk my negro boy named Essex to her and the heirs of her body forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Elisabeth Berry my negro boy Simon to her and the heirs of her Body forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Anne Simpson my negro Girl named Sukky her and her Increase to her and her heirs of her Body forever together with a Ewe and lamb a cow and calf a feather bed & Furniture & a grey mare colt. Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Jane Simpson my negro Girl named hannah with her Increase also a Ewe and Lamb a cow and calf a feather bed and Furniture & a mare colt to her and the heirs of her Body forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my son William Simpson my negro wench Peg with her Increase with ten hogs a Ewe and Lamb to him and his heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath to my son James Simpson my negro fellow named Jim to him and his heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Alexander Simpson my Negro fellow named Bemo [?] and my fellow named Benbo [?] to him & his heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath to my son John Simpson my Negro fellow named Sambo with a Ewe and lamb a cow and calf to him & his heirs forever. Item that after my Just debts are paid and the above legacies paid out According to the distributions my will and Desire is that all the rest of my Estate be Equally Divided among my four sons namely -- William James Alexander and John Simpson to be to them and their heirs forever. Lastly I constitute and appoint Colo James Barbour William Simpson James Simpson Alexander Simpson & John Simpson Executors of this my Last will and Testament. I bequeath my precious and immortal soul to the Almighty God who gave it in full hope of pardon and remission for all my past sins and transgressions this the merits and meditations of my most compassionate redeemer. Jesus Christ my body to be decently buried at the designation of Executors hereafter named and as to such worldly estate herewith hath pleased God to bless me I dispose of the same as follows: IN PRIMIS I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Charles Duncan twenty-five pounds [silver] to him and his heirs forever. ITEM I give and bequeath to my well beloved James Duncan all that tract of land on which I now live with the appurtenances as also my desk and bookcase to him and his heirs forever. ITEM My will and desire is that all the revenue of my estate be sold to the highest bidder at six- months credit and the money arising from said sale (after paying all my just debts and legacies) be equally divided among my sons Rawley Duncan William Duncan John Duncan , deceased, Joseph Duncan and Charles Duncan and my daughter Anne Roberts, but my will and desire is that the dividend of part intended for my son John Duncan, deceased, be equally divided amongst all his lawful children sons and daughters as also all the dividend or part intended for my Daughter Anne Roberts be equally divided among all my said Daughter Anne's children both sons and daughters. And lastly I hereby constitute and appoint my well beloved sons Joseph and James Duncan and my said Trudy and faithful John Bradford executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me and declaring this to be my last will and testament In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of February 1781.
