Culpeper County, VA - Will Book D P. 356 JOSEPH DUNCAN'S WILL In the name of God Amen I Joseph Duncan of the county of Culpepper and parrish of Hollark being in perfect mind and memory (praise God) knowing the uncertainty of this mortal life and that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament hereby revoking and disallowing all wills by me heretofore made principally and first of all I give my soul to the hands of Almighty God who gave it trusting through the [mouth??] and instruction of my blessed savior to receive pardon and [remov] of all my sins my body I commit to the earth to be directly buried at the direction of my executor hereinafter named and as to what bodily Estate it has pleased God to bless me with I give and dispose of all manner following. In primus my desire is that all my last debts and funeral expenses be first paid first part. Item I leave to my beloved wife Mary Duncan during her natural life or widowhood the land whereon I now live also three negroes Boz Cyrus Esther and India her choices of one of the stock of horses her choice of three of my flock of cattle one good bed and furniture my desk cupboard and folding table large black walnut chest and at the death of my said wife that the property but as aforesaid be sold and the money arising from such sale to be equally divided between all my children to whit Salley Mary George Jenny Elizabeth Frances Lucy and Joseph but if my said wife should marry in that case my desire is that the property so lent her should be immediately sold on a credit of twelve months and equally divided between my said children Salley Yancy Mary Duncan George Duncan Jenny Johnston Elizabeth Rouls Frances Duncan Lucy Threlkeld and Joseph Duncan to them their heirs forever. ITEM I give and bequeath by my daughter Mary Duncan one feathered bed and furniture one cow and calf and fifteen pounds to her and her heirs forever. ITEM I give and bequeath to my son George Duncan one feathered bed one cow and calf to him and his heirs forever. ITEM I give and bequeath to my daughter Frances Duncan one cow and calf one bed and furniture and fifteen pounds to her and her heirs forever. ITEM I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Duncan one bed and furniture one cow and calf to him and his heirs forever. ITEM I give and bequeath to my daughter Jenny Johnston one bed and furniture one cow and calf (already received) and fifteen pounds to be paid after my death to her and her heirs forever ITEM I give and bequeath to my daughter Lucy Threlkeld one bed and furniture one cow and calf (already received) and fifteen pounds to be paid after my death to her and her heirs forever ITEM I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth Rout one bed and furniture (already received) and twenty pounds to be paid after my death to her and her heirs forever ITEM I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sally Yancy one bed and furniture one cow and calf (already received) and fifteen pounds to be paid after my death to her and her heirs forever It is my desire that the rest and residue of my estate be sold by my executor on a credit of 12 months and the money arising from such sale be equally divided between all my children (???} Sally Yancy Mary Duncan George Duncan Lucy Threlkeld Jenny Johnston and Joseph Duncan to them and their heirs forever Lastly I appoint my son George Duncan and my friend Benjamin Ferguson as executors of this my last will and testament I testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of August 1801.
