CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Clifton Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Clifton cemetery: 1936 July 29 Research made by Marie Keller Frazee Cemetery Location: 2.4 miles north of Cumberland, Virginia, on Route #60, left 11.9 miles on Route #45, left .7 mile on Route #16, and 1.1 miles from that route. The cemetery is a few hundred yards northeast of the Clifton house. Cumberland County DATE: 1800, date of oldest grave (marker). OWNERS: The Clifton family. DESCRIPTION: The cemetery is enclosed by a brick wall. The wall is encased with a tick layer of cement. This is beginning to fall off in places, but the cemetery as a whole is well taken care of. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Large flat slab inscribed: Here lies all that was mortal of Kitty Daughter of Harry and Nancy Heth of Blackheath and beloved wife of Archibald M. Harrison Born 31st July 1800 Died 16th July 1833 This stone is placed over her remains by her bereaved and afflicted Husband, Mother and Brother as a memorial of her virtue and of their affection. If the memory of departed virtue be a consolation to those who loved it in its mortal shape, her friends are in possession of an inexhaustible south of comfort in the assurance that she died resigned and happy in the live of her Redeemer. Flat slab inscribed: Archibald M. Harrison of Carysbrook Born the 17th of Mar. 1842 _______48 Flat slab inscribed: Mary Harrison was born at Dungeoness Feb’y 21st 1773 She devoted her young days to the care of an aged and infirmed Father. By marriage she was transplanted to Glentivar. Here dawned those virtues for which as a Wife, Mother and Friend, she was remarkable through life. Contented with little out of a small store she was a cheerful giver and when by the blessing of God upon the exertions of a kind Husband, her possessions were increased, of her abundance, she gave freely. She had a heart, warm, fond and true. In person, among the fairest of all God’s Creatures. In manners, affectionate, affable, unassuming. She closed her useful and happy life in the peace of God and the Christian hope At Clifton, Oct. 10th 1835. Large flat slab inscribed: To the memory of Carter Henry Harrison Born the 17th of Jan. 1776 Died the 29th of Aug. 1800 While the purity of his principles, The rectitude of his conduct and The excellence of his understanding commanded the respect of all who knew him, A heart liberal and benevolent, A temper mild and social, Won their regard. From the fair promises made by his virtues and his patriotism, His country has cause to join an afflicted in lamenting the untimely fate of a Son, equally affectionate and beloved. Large flat slab inscribed: Here lies interred all that was mortal of Randolph Harrison who departed this life Sept. 24th 1859 the 71st year of his age. A man of rare worth, characterized by the traits which constitute true ___ In married life he was the examplar of husbands, as a father he was affectionate, provident and judicious, as a friend he was true and faithful, as a neighbor, kind and charitable, as a member of society, an ardent and enlightened patriot. But above all, he lived in conformity to the principles of Christian morality and died in the hope of salvation through Christ. Leaving four sons and six daughters of cherish his memory in the grateful recollection of his virtues and to transmit through their numerous descendants the happy influence of his well spent life. Monument about eight feet tall inscribed: Randolph Harrison 4th son of Randolph and Mary Harrison born at Glentivar, 27th Feb’y 1798 Died 8th May, 1844 Aged 46 I know that my Redeemer liveth and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth Job 19:25 Medium sized upright slab inscribed: In memory of Isham Randolph Born March 27, 1771 Died Aug. 20, 1844 Aged 73 years As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness, I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness. Large flat slab inscribed: This slab marks the remains of Virginia Randolph Harrison She died in Richmond on the 10th of Dec. 1850 Aged 16 years and seven months. With every quality of mind and heart, To make her the delight of her family, She was ever an object of painful solicitude. Her beauty was of the first order, But we beheld it with sorrow. Her doating Parents placed before her every thing that could give a charm to life but with the keenest relish for its pleasure, She partook of them with a foreboding of ill For disease had early marked her for its prey. Young as she was she saw in her afflictions the hand of her Heavenly Father and made the Bible her daily companion. It fell from her hand when the convulsive stroke came which finished her term of probation and released her heaven-born spirit from its earthly tabernacle. Now to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, The blessed Three-in-One, I resign myself in humble trust, And prayer for the deliverance of my soul From the Thraldom of mortality, And its happy welcome in the Redeemer’s Kingdom. Medium sized upright slabs inscribed: Peyton Harrison Atkinson Born April 22nd 1812 Died Sept. 25th 1848 Betty Carr Atkinson Wife of Rev. John M.P. Atkinson Daughter of Rev. Peyton Harrison Born May 3rd 1826 Died April 27th 1847 Loved on earth Loved more in Heaven Father, I will that they also whom Thou hast given me, be with me where I am. Jane Cary Harrison Wife of Rev. Peyton Harrison Daughter of Judge Dabney Carr Born December 2nd, 1807 Died July 21st 1859 Peace I leave with you. My peace, I give unto you. Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Large upright slab inscribed: Peyton Harrison Born at Clifton November 19th 1800 Died September 10th 1887 He was a good man and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith. Small upright slab inscribed: Nelson Page second son of B.H. and M.R. Harrison died Sept. 14th 1855 Of such are the kingdom of Heaven Small flat slab inscribed: William Byrd Harrison Third son of Wm. B. and Mary R. Harrison Born on the 1st of October 1837 Died on the 16th of July 1846 Small thick upright slab inscribed: At Rest Colonel Randolph Harrison C.S.A. of Ampthill Died Sept. 13, 1900 Large upright slab inscribed: Sally H. Harrison Consort of George F. Harrison Died July 14th 1849 in the 24th year of Her Age She is not dead but sleepeth Large upright slab inscribed: Edward Jacquelin Harrison Surgeon C.S.A. Oct. 18, 1824 April 18, 1903 Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. Large flat slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Thomas Randolph Harrison who died at Dover on the 3rd of November, 1833 Aged 45 years He was a man of spotless integrity, of uncommon tenacity of purpose, of a generous spirit and warm heart, with such qualities, he could not but be what he was – a valuable friend, a kind and affectionate husband, father, son and brother, in all which relations, he was sincerely beloved; but more than all, he died a Christian with the assurance that a place was open for him in the house of his Redeemer.
