CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “Deanery” Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Deanery cemetery: 1936 Aug. 13 Research made by Mary (i.e. Marie) Keller Frazee Cemetery Location: 2.4 miles north of Cumberland, Virginia, on Route #60, left 14.2 miles on Route #45; in Cartersville, Virginia, on the James River. Cumberland County DATE: 1793, date of oldest grave (marker). OWNERS: Mr. R.D. Irving, Cartersville, Virginia. (1936) DESCRIPTION: This cemetery was at one time much smaller than it is now. It was surrounded by a thick wall of brick. Need for a larger cemetery became apparent, so the old wall was torn down and the bricks were cleaned and a wall of less thickness was erected around a larger area of ground. No other brick except the original were used in the construction of this wall. The top of the wall is capped with a layer of cement. Exceptional and constant care has been taken of the cemetery. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The inscriptions are as follows: A large marble slab supported by six marble columns about two feet tall on a base slab of marble. In memory of Francis Browne Deane, Jr. Only son of Francis B. and Ann H. Deane Born in Cartersville, Va. Sept. 25th 1796 Died in Lynchburg, Va. Nov’r 26th 1868 In love and charity to all mankind, in the warm and zealous support of the Christian religion in the firm persuasion of his own insufficiency and in the all sufficiency of the Holy Redeemer he lived and died praying that he might believe in, and be accepted of Him, who alone hath power on earth to forgive sins. A large flat slab inscribed: In memory of Paulus A.E. Irving, M.D. Born June 24th 1831 Died May 3rd 1853 In Faith and Hope triumphant and leaning on Jehova’s staff The youthful Pilgrim has passed through the dark waters of Jordan And the light of his life’s meridian Caught upon Eternity’s dial Shines like a summer glory From the land of the pure and the home of the blest. Large flat slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Robert Irving who was born April 15th 1790 and died February 6th 1850 He needs no sculptured stone to tell the story of his life or point the stranger to his narrow bed. The record of his virtues is written in the hearts of living friends. His sleeping dust is guarded by the watchful eye of God. Large flat slab inscribed: Underneath are deposited the earthly remains of Francis B. Deane Who was born August 20th 1770 in the town of Galway, Kingdom of Ireland. Early in life, December 25th 1788, he came to Virginia, became a resident of Cartersville, August 10th 1791 wherein he resided till his death which occurred May 31st 1860 then aged nearly ninety. Small upright slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Ellen Laghbie Daughter of Dr. B.F. and E.D. Frayser Born Nov. 20th 1850 Died Dec. 25th 1852 Large flat slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Dr. Benjamin F. Frayser Born October 2nd 1819 Died January 10th 1852 He was a skilled physician, a true friend a constant and faithful Christian. His living virtues and triumphant death was a satisfying and glorious testimony to the grace and power of the gospel. I am the resurrection and the life, whosoever believeth in me though he were dead yet shall he live and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Medium size upright slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Deane Daughter of Dr. B.F. and E.D. Frayser Born 27, May 1848 Died 19, June 1849 Large flat slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth H. Irving Consort of Robert Irving and daughter of F.B. Deane of Cartersville Who departed this life Aug’t 18th 1836 Aged 33 years In the bloom of womanhood: in the midst of her usefullness beloved by all who knew her, dispensing comfort and satisfaction to her domestic circle. The summons put forth; Come thou blessed of my Father inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the commencement of the World. No sickness, or sorrow, or pain Shall disquiet her now For death, to her spirit, was gain, Since Christi was her hope when below. Her soul has now taken its flight To mansions of glory above To mingle with Angels of light And swell in the Kingdom of Love. Large flat slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Anne H. Deane Consort of F.B. Deane, Sen’r. Who departed this life on the 19th of August 1833 Aged 65 years. In her life was exhibited that assemblage of virtues, which constitutes the Christian character. So in her death was developed the glorious triumph of an immortal and redeemed spirit. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth. Yea, saith the spirit that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them. This stone is the tribute paid by filial love to maternal excellence. Medium size upright slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Robert T. Irving son of Robert and Elizabeth Irving Born March 6th 1836 Died Feb’y 18th 1838 Of such is the kingdom of Heaven Small arched stone inscribed: Arianna Deane daughter of J.M. and N.W. Kirkpatrick Born Dec’r 27 1855 Died Oct’r 1, 1861 Father, how tender is thy care, That Death should touch The beauty of this little flower To make it bloom immortal. Small low stone inscribed: Francis Arianna Irving Died 20th July 1854 Aged 13 months Of such is the kingdom of Heaven Medium size upright slab inscribed: Ann Mildred Irving Died October 22nd 1820 Aged 10 months Large flat slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of John Woodson who died the 16th April 1792 in the 77th year of his age. Husband to Elizabeth and Father to John, Nancy and Polly, Grandfather to John P. Woodson He was a kind husband, an affectionate father and lived and died an honest man, the noblest work of God. Large flat slab inscribed: In the memory of John P. Woodson who died on the 28th July 1815 in the 20th year of his age Too well I know the fervent love of hearts sincere combined when rent asunder how they bleed, how hard to be resigned to loose such a friend, I sigh no more. Tis prudent but severe. Heaven aid my weakness and drop all sorrow with this tear. We mourn his loss but rejoice in his death. He lives immortal in a better World than this. A large flat slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of John Woodson who died May 19th 1832 Aged 67 years He was a good man and filled with the Holy Ghost and of faith of 11th Chap. of Acts. And now Lord, what wait I for? My hope is in thee, 49th Psalm. Large flat slab inscribed: To perpetuate the remembrance of worth not often equalled Ann S. Woodson who died 22nd Feb’y 1826 in the 49th year of her age. The wife of John Woodson, Jr. and Mother of John P. Woodson. It is the Lord, let him do what seemeth Him Good.
