Meadow Cemetery Location: 5 miles southwest (left) of Cumberland Court House, Virginia, beginning on Route #60. Go 2 miles southwest (left) of Cumberland Court House, Virginia, on Route #60, thence south (left) 3 miles on Route #45. The cemetery is about 100 yards east of Langhorne’s Tavern, which is south (left) of the highway. (The cemetery is left of the house.) Cumberland County DATE: Unknown OWNERS: 1813 Jesse Anderson sold land to Maurice Langhorne, Jr. (26 acres, consideration, $630.00. Deed Book 12, page 329.) 1831 Maurice Langhorne and wife sold land to Peter B. Foster. (398.1 acres, consideration, $1500.00 and in consideration of other sums to be paid. Deed Book 20, page 305.) The Foster Graveyard has been in the Foster family ever since 1831. Peter B. Foster left two sons – Peter Foster, Jr. and John T. Foster. The cemetery is now owned by grandchildren of Peter B. Foster. DESCRIPTION: The Old Foster Graveyard, which contains about one eighth of an acres, is enclosed with woven wire. There are several walnut trees in the cemetery and also boxwood and roses. The graveyard is very well taken care of, as it usually is cleaned off once a year by one or some of the owners. There are no markers. There are about ten or twelve graves. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Mr. and Mrs. Peter B. Foster, Sr., were buried in this cemetery. Said Mr. Foster was a very prominent man, who, at one time, owned hundreds of acres of land, He owned the most of the land in the present village of Cumberland Court House, as well as much land on what was then called the Buckingham Road, but is now the highway, Routes #60 and #45. The said Peter B. Foster was the owner and operator of a large hotel in the village of Cumberland Court House, Virginia. It is said that as many as one hundred guests were given dinner at this hotel on court days. Peter B. Foster, Jr., owned or inherited the brick dwelling, which is in the village of Cumberland Court House, Virginia, east of the clerk’s office. This was built for lawyer’s offices. The writer sent in a write-up and photograph of his place. Peter B. Foster, Jr., was buried in this cemetery and also Mr. and Mrs. John T. Foster. The latter Mr. Foster owned a home in the village known as “Liberty Hall". He was well versed in legal matters and his home was a favorite gathering place for lawyers, the evenings before court days.
