Meadow Cemetery Location: 5 miles north of Farmville, Virginia on Route #45; thence east 8 miles on Route #638. The church is south of the road. The cemetery is forty yards south of the church. Cumberland County DATE: Exact date unknown. OWNERS: Cemetery is and has been the property of Guinea Church. DESCRIPTION: Forty yards south of Guinea Church is the Guinea Church Cemetery. The principal cemetery or the one nearest to the church, is enclosed with iron and faces west. This graveyard has double gates and contains one large oak tree near the southwest corner. The cemetery is overgrown with weeds and bushes, and dead leaves and pieces of decayed wood are scattered on the ground. In this enclosure, there are two graves in the northeast corner and each has a marker. South of the above mentioned enclosure, there is another. This is enclosed with wire and is half as large as the other one. This has two graves near the center. One has no marker and the other has a small one. This enclosure has no trees. South of the last mentioned enclosure is one practically as large as the first enclosure. This is enclosed with wire and has a large oak tree at the northwest corner. This has four graves and three markers. South of the third enclosure, there are eight graves, with no fence. One of these graves has a marker. South of these graves, there is an iron fence around one grave, which has no marker. South of this one enclosed grave, there are tow graves enclosed with an iron fence. Each grave has a marker. South of these two graves, there is a grave which is not enclosed and has a marker. One grave has the following inscription: Hugh Johnson July 30, 1832 May 18, 1908 At Rest On the other grave in the enclosure nearest to the church there is this inscription: Louisa Henderson Johnson Wife of Hugh Johnson Born Apr. 28, 1848 Died Feb. 22, 1916 Thy Trials ended, thy rest is won There is the following inscription on the grave in the second enclosure: Mother Sacred to the memory of Lucy Nelson Page Wife of W.L. Johnson Jan. 17, 1852 Feb. 14, 1895 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God On three graves in the third enclosure, there are the following inscriptions: In memory of Martha H. Hughes Born May 17, 1831 Died Jan’y 4, 1908 Asleep in Jesus In Memory of Our Sunday School Teacher John Woodfin Hughes Born July 5, 1831 Died May 21, 1898 Asleep in Jesus W.B.H. William Blanton Hughes Died May 13, 1916 Among the eight graves that are not enclosed, one has the following inscription: BABY Thomas Lilburn Crawley Dec. 23, 1916 Jan. 26, 1917 Safe in the arms of Jesus The two graves that are enclosed with an iron fence have the following inscriptions: In memory of Our Mother Maggie Tinsley Crawley Born Dec. 22, 1844 Died March 13, 1911 Asleep in Jesus In memory of Our Teacher Charles W. Crawley Born Nov. 22, 18_5 Died Oct. 24, 1890 Asleep in Jesus A grave, not enclosed, south of these two last mentioned graves, has the following inscription: Hanna Fennell Crawley Oct. 18, 1867 Nov. 1, 1929 She lived for others HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Louisa Henderson Johnson, who was buried in the Guinea Church Cemetery, was the daughter of Judge William Perkins, he was a prominent lawyer of Cumberland County. Mrs. Louisa Johnson was also the granddaughter of Dr. Robert Henderson. He was a prominent physician and also owned, at one time, many acres of land in Cumberland County. Charles W. Crawley, who was buried in the same cemetery, was an outstanding teacher of public school. He was the father of the present clerk of Cumberland County. Mr. Charles W. Crawley’s youngest son, Prof. Lindsey Crawley, is the principal of the high school in Appomattox County, with an enrollment of several hundred students. Maggie Tinsley Crawley, who was buried in the same graveyard, was the mother of the present clerk, Mr. Lewis Crawley, of Cumberland County. Mrs. Maggie Crawley was an outstanding woman. Being left a widow with many small children, she taught school successfully for many years, thereby educating the most of her children, if not all of them. Mrs. Crawley was a cultured Christian lady. She had three daughters, all of whom taught school. Hanna Crawley, who was buried at Guinea Church, was noted for her lovely Christian character. She was the daughter of Mrs. Maggie Crawley and the sister of Mr. Lewis Crawley, who is the clerk of Cumberland County.
