Meadow Cemetery Location: 5 miles north of Farmville, Virginia on Route #45, thence east 6.5 miles on Route #638. Take the private road south .4 mile. The cemetery is on the east side of the road. Cumberland County DATE: 1855 OWNERS: John Miller From unknown date to 1825 Thomas Wilson Crowder From 1825 to 1851 John E. Crowder From 1851 to 1888 E. S. Walker from 1889 to the present time. (1937) DESCRIPTION: “Locust Grove” cemetery is at the back side of the vegetable garden at “Locust Grove”, which garden is a few yards south of the house. The graveyard is enclosed with a wire fence. There are weeds and bushes in the cemetery, but no shrubbery. There are four trees, one sassafras and three honeyshuck trees. There are forty graves, several of which have markers. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following inscriptions were copied from the stones: In memory of Mrs. Martha J. wife of Thomas F. Wilson Born March 15, 1835 Died August 5, 1860 Robert S. Garnett 1821 – 1898 and Sarah W. His wife 1830 – 1890 and John E. Garnett 1860 – 1877 Sacred to the memory of Thomas Wilson Crowder Born Dec. 23, 1795 Died Jan. 8, 1855 John E. Walker son of E.S. Walker May 8, 1888 June 1, 1908 He died as he lived – a Christian Sallie Walker Wife of E.S. Walker Dec. 28, 1867 July 4, 1900 None knew her but to love her John Miller, who sold this place in 1825, was a captain in the Mexican War. He also was a slave holder and at one time owned several hundred acres of land. Thomas Wilson Crowder was also a slave holder and at one time owned several hundred acres of land.
