CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “Mount Elba” Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Mount Elba: 1936 Nov. 13 Research made by Marie Keller Frazee Cemetery Location: 3.4 miles north of Cumberland, Virginia on U.S. Route #60; thence northwest 11.9 miles on Route #45; thence west 4.8 miles on Route #16; thence 1.5 miles south from that route. Cumberland County DATE: 1819 HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The cemetery is at the south of the house. The remains of the old stone wall are still there. At one time the wall was intact and had a stone arch gateway on the north side. The tomb stones are hand hewn out of native stone. The stones are all the same size and rounded off at the top. Some of the inscriptions: To the memory of Major David Shields Born August 28, 1768 Died August 1837 To the memory of John B. Shields Born March 2, 1815 Died December 3, 1818 To the memory of David W. Shields Born Nov. 18, 1816 Died Dec. 17, 1833 To the memory of Dr. Alfred W. Shields Born Feb. 22, 1807 Died April 19, 1841 The other tombstones have no death date on them. B. P. Shields Born December 3, 1820 M. J. Shields Born October 31, 1821 In the road that runs by the front lawn of the house, was a long stone set upright in the ground. It is thought to have marked an Indian grave.
