Cumberland County DATE: 1834, date of oldest grave (marker). OWNERS: The Page family. DESCRIPTION: (blank) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This cemetery is on what is known as “Old Fork Plantation”, the ancestral home of the prominent Pages of Virginia. The tombstone inscriptions are as follows: A medium sized flat marble slab inscribed: To the memory of our Father Robert Burwell Page who died Sept. 1837 Aged 31 years This stone is raised by His affectionate children Honor Thy Father A large flat marble slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Lucia Cary daughter of Randolph and Mary Harrison and tenderly loved wife of Nelson Page Blessed by nature with warm affections and tender sensibilities and a most unusual sweetness of disposition, her character strengthened by the elevating and sactifying influences of early and ardent piety was one of surpassing loveliness. Ever willing to sacrifice her own inclinations and wishes to the good of others, she was one of the most disinterested of human beings. She lived beloved by all who knew her, of every age, and of every class; and died in the enjoyment of a bright hope of a happy immortality giving it as her dying testimony that Jesus Christ was the anchor of her soul, sure and steadfast even unto the end and that “for him she was willing to give up all, even her tenderly loved husband and children.” She died on the 5th of August 1842 In the 33rd year of her age. Large upright marble slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Nelson Page the beloved son of Carter and Lucy Page who departed this life on the 6th of Dec. 1850 Aged 49 years Mark the perfect man and behold The upright for the end of that man is peace. He taught us how to live and oh – too high The price of knowledge taught us how to die. Small upright marble slab: Catherine Thornton Daughter of Johnathan P. and Lucy J. Cushing died August 30th 1834 Aged 14 months These ashes too, little dust Our Father’s care shall keep Will the last angel rise and break The long and dreary sleep. Small upright marble slab inscribed: George Washington Son of Rev. George W. and Mary M. Dame died July 30th 1859 Aged 8 months O let us to the Savior fly, Whose arm alone can save Then shall our hopes ascend on high And triumph over the grave. Small upright marble inscribed: Robert son of Frances D. and Lucy C. Irving died March 11, 1853 Aged 2 years and 10 months As the sweet flowers that scent the morn, But withers in the rising day; This lovely was this infants dawn, Thus swiftly fled its life away. Tall marble column inscribed: In memory of Bettie Gentle wife of Rev. W.C. Meredith and daughter of J.P. and Lucy J. Cushing Born Sept. 14, 1831 Died Jan. 17, 1865 Tenderly beloved in every relation of life, An humble follower of Christ and faithful member of Church. Her end was peace and blessed assurance forever. Large upright marble slab inscribed: Sacred to the memory of Lucy Cushing Irving Wife of Frances Dean Irving and eldest daughter of Jonathan and Lucy J. Cushing Having finished her course with joy and having kept the faith, she ceased to breathe July 8, 1855 Aged 25 years Small upright marble slab inscribed: William N. Page, Jr. a soldier boy Beloved son of William N. and F.P. Page fell on the battle field of Manassas July 21, 1861 Aged 20 years.
