Charlton/Lipford Case, 1782 - Cumberland Co. VA Order Book re: Charlton 26 August 1782 At a court held for Cumberland County at the court house on Monday the twenty sixth day of August one thousand seven hundred and eighty two. Present: Geo Carrington Frederick Hatcher Richard Allen and John Woodson Gentleman Justices Page 252 Nancy Lipford plt. against Abraham Charlton deft. - In case This day came the parties in their proper persons and the following prostestation of the def't on oath towit "Abram Chalton made oath before me this day that he had been informed that John Land had informed Nancy Lipford that he the sd. Chalton had told him that the negroes had reported that the said Nancy was kept by negroes, which he the said Chalton upon oath says is false & further he declares that he believes that the said Land did malitiousy invent the said story given under my hand this 29th day of Apr '1 1780 John Woodson." also the following protestation of the def't. subscribed by him towit "This is to certify that I do declare that what John Land told Nancy an Lipford concerning what I should say touching her character is false for I never told him any such thing nor never had any desire to hurt her character. I further declare that what acquaintance I ever had with Nancy an Lipford I looked upon her to be one of the best girls in our parts and of my own knowledge I have no right to beleive any other way. Now every man I welcome to sign this writing as chooses it Abraham Charlton" are produced in court by the plt. and on her motion with the consent of the defendant ordered to be recorded and thereupon by consent of the parties it is considered by the court that this suit be dismissed and that the plt. recover against the deft. her costs by her in this behalf expended.
