DICKNSON COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES - Sutherland Cemetery At Sullivan Branch ----¤¤¤---- LATITUDE/LONGITUDE 370546N 820958W (Per USGS Quad Map: Duty, VA) DIRECTIONS >From Haysi, VA head south on Rt 80 past Abner Gap to Rt 602. Turn right on 602 and continue for about a mile until 688 is seen on the right. This follows Sullivan Branch of Indian Creek. The first house on the right is the Sullivan Branch church. The 6 or 7th house on the right has a large fence on its side yard. The stones are hidden behind this fence. FIELD NOTES: 2/13/99 I spoke to Roy Harrison who is the brother-in-law of the owner of the property. He indicated it was ok to survey the site. He said neither he nor his family knew anything much about the graves on their property. Interestingly, because both Sutherland and Sullivan are in the area, he pronounced both as "Suthivan", slurring both into one name. The few graves are kept well even though they are next to a storage shed. FORMAT Note: Items in parenthesis are the best guess of the researcher. Items in brackets are my comments. A double stone is two people on one stone - usually husband and wife unless otherwise indicated. SURNAME LIST BALDRIDGE and SUTHERLAND. ======================================================== W. H. SUTHERLAND, Apr 5, 187(3) - Dec 22, 1940 Made by Frank Sutherland [Handmade stone was pretty well-worked] Sowar [or Squar or Sqwar] SUTHERLAND, Dec 5, 1853 - Jan 5, 1923 Anna SUTHERLAND, Jan 28, 1863 - Jun 13, 1910 William BALDRIDGE Feb 7, 1890 - July 26, 1956 [Military Plaque] Kentucky, Pvt Mg Co, 156, INF, WWI ======================================================== RESEARCHER NOTES: Sullivan Branch was the homeplace of Squire and Annie Musick Sutherland. These could very well be their two graves, however most dates conflict with E.J. Sutherland's book, Some Descendants of John Counts. Anna's death date is some 30 years off unless, due to my difficulty reading - and someone's dificulty working the stone, 1910 could be 1940. W. H. would NOT be W.M. Sutherland (Squire and Anna's son) even though the birthdate is close, because W. M. (William Marshall Sutherland) is buried over at the Sutherland Cemetery at Abner's gap. William Baldridge is most probably the William "Bill" Baldridge that married Cora B. Sutherland, dau of Squire and Annie Musick. PHOTOGRAPHS AVAILABLE A photograph was made of the few stones here and is available free in JPG format for those interested. The picture was taken with snow on the ground. Send your request to me at zens@mindspring.com, and give me a few days to figure out which zip disk they’re on. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
