Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late George W. and Missouri Deel. He was a former coal mine operator and was a member of Little David Old Regular Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, brothers Paris, Archie and Nubern; and sister, Melvinie Conaway and Lura Gay Deel preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Katy Deel of Tazewell; a son, Jamie Deel and wife Patti of Tazewell; daughters, Jennifer Owens and husband Jeff of Vansant, Sondra Sutherland and husband Tim of Pawleys Island, S.C., and Karen Deel and husband Chris of Vansant; sisters, Euvie Dales of Pounding Mill, Va., and Polly Compton of Vansant; brothers, Donald Deel of Haysi, Lando Deel of Tazewell and Earl Deel of Vansant; and grandchildren, Amy, Sara, Heather, Kaitlynn and Jake. Funeral service will be Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Little David Old Regular Baptist Church on Russell Prater with Elders Frank Newsome, Toby Bailey and William McClanahan officiating. Burial will follow at the George W. Deel Cemetery at Route 2, Haysi. Mack Hayes, Moscow Yates, Clayton Deel, Johnny Mullins, Eddie O'quinn, Clayton O'quinn, Blane Owens and Daryl Horne will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Haysi Funeral Home Chapel where an evening service will be held at 6 p.m. with Pastor Dion Marshall and Elders Andy Deel, David O'quinn, Frank O'quinn and Denny Deel. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
