Dinwiddie County DATE: 1825, date of oldest grave. OWNERS: Mr. John T. Wilkerson. (1937) DESCRIPTION: There are two large table tombs in the plot. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following inscriptions are to be seen on the stones: Sacred to the memory of That aged Christian, Augustine Billups Who lived faithful in discharge of his duty, And finished his course in the County of Dinwiddie The 18th of June 1825 Aged 69 years This tomb is erected by his disconsolate wife, Mary Billups By the upright Who knew his worth as a servant of the Lord. He is Lamented. Sacred to the memory of Captain Augustine Ellis Merchant of Petersburg, Died 16th of March 1826 In the 52nd year of his age. His afflicted wife has caused this tomb to be erected In memory of An affectionate, kind husband Benevolent, Kind master And a warm friend of his Country. Thy years were few but thy virtues were many They are recorded not on this perishing stone But in the book of life, and in the hearts of thine afflicted friends. The same lot contains the dust of four of his children to died in infancy. Soldier approach this tomb and drop a tear The relics of a brave man moulders here, If kind, sincere, if honour swells thy breast, Kneel here, a brothers soul lies at rest.
