Dinwiddie County DATE: July 1849. OWNERS: This land was given to William Dabney by his mother, Mrs. John Dabney, nee Miss Boisseau, in 1832. It was willed by William Dabney to his daughter, Martha William Taylor Dabney in 1851. It was inherited by Dabney Ragsdale and Miss Annie Ragsdale, children of Martha William Taylor Dabney Ragsdale and Richard Edward Ragsdale. Dabney Ragsdale, the present owner (1937), recently inherited the share of the late Annie Ragsdale, who died without a will. DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is located in the corner of the yard, just a short distance west of the Dabney home. Four graves are enclosed by a gray granite stone wall, which is about three and one-half feet high, and these four graves are on a level with the top of the wall. The space within the wall is not large enough to accommodate other graves, so the other two members of the family are buried just outside of the east wall. There is one marble stone for one of the graves within the granite wall, and there is a small marble stone for one of the graves just outside of the wall. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Inside of the stone wall, there is a marble stone, about two and one-half feet high on a marble base, with the following inscription on it: Dedicated To the Memory of William Dabney Born Aug. 7, 1808 Died Aug. 9, 1871 As a testimonial of the affection of his daughter There is a small marble foot-stone, marked “W.D.”. The following members of the Dabney family are buried here, without tombstones at their graves: Julia Ann Sydnor Dabney daughter of Capt. John Taylor Sydnor and his wife. She was born July 15, 1818 and died July 20, 1904. Martha William Taylor Dabney Ragsdale daughter of William Dabney and Julia A.S. Dabney, and the wife of Richard Edward Ragsdale. She was born about 1839 and died May 23, 1909. Richard Edward Ragsdale the husband of Martha William Taylor Dabney. He was born April 9, 1844 and died April 28, 1913. The following two members of this family are buried just outside the wall, and there is a small tombstone marking the grave of A.B.C. Dabney: A.B.C. Dabney Sacred Daughter of Julia Dabney Died July 15, 1849 Aged 11 years Annie Ragsdale daughter of Martha William Taylor Dabney Ragsdale and Richard Edward Ragsdale.
