DINWIDDIE COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “Groveland” Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Groveland site and graveyard: 1936 Apr. 17 Research made by Mamie Fraser Cemetery Location: 12 miles south of Dinwiddie Court House, Virginia, and about 2 miles from the Stage Road and .5 mile from the Bolling Road. Dinwiddie County DATE: 1832 OWNERS: “Groveland” was very probably a home of a King family as records show that Samuel Pryor purchased it from William R. Johnson, September 9, 1836, it being the same tract conveyed to Mr. Johnson by Elizabeth King and Mary King by their two deeds, the former bearing date June 15, 1832 and the latter, July 1, 1834. Samuel Pryor sold this home to E.E. Overton. It was next purchased by John Slate, November 29, 1842. “Groveland: is known in that section as the home of the Slates. It was next purchased by George W. Barner, and owned next by inheritance, by John W. Barner. It is now owned by The American Hardware Company, of Petersburg, Virginia. This house was burned several years ago. DESCRIPTION: This house consisted of one medium sized room and hall on the first floor and the same on the second floor. Mr. Slate reared a family of twelve children in this small house. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: There is a graveyard at “Groveland:, but there are only two tombstones. They bear the following inscriptions: Mother Addie Wife of J.C. Duane Died Nov. 1, 1892 Aged 45 years In love she lived In peace she died Her life was craved But God denied.
