DINWIDDIE CO., VA - CEMETERIES – Harmon Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Lorenzo Dow Harmon family graveyard: 1937 Apr. 5 Research made by Dorothy Gray Pilout Cemetery Location: 2.8 miles west of Sutherland, Virginia, on Route #460, thence 3.7 miles south of Route #460 by Route #628, thence .1 mile east of Route #628 on private lane to the site of the old Sydnor house, thence 30 yards north of the house site to the graveyard. Dinwiddie County DATE: 1860s. OWNERS: It is said by some members of the family that the land upon which this graveyard is located was a land grant to the Sydnor family. (A Sydnor married a Harmon) It was deeded to John T. Sydnor, Jr., by John T. Sydnor, January 18, 1841. It was sold November 9, 1870 to John William Harmon by Alexander Donnan and Robert H. Jones, Commissioners appointed by the Circuit Court in the suit of Hays Executors, and Harmon and Sydnor. John William Harmon willed it to his wife, Mary Verdaline Sydnor Harmon, in January 1905; at her death it was to go to their son, Joseph Travis Harmon, and he is the present owner. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This graveyard which is located a short distance north of the site of the old homestead, has only four graves with stones, and they are not tombstones. The plot is enclosed with a paling fence and a few shrubs grow in the corners near the fence. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following is a list of members of the Harmon family who are buried in the graveyard: Lorenzo Dow Harmon birth unknown. It is thought that he died in the late sixties. He was of English birth and was the first member of the Harmon family to come to this country. Susanna Chambers Harmon wife of Lorenzo Dow Harmon; date of birth unknown. She died October 1, 1882 and was over eighty years of age when she died. John William Harmon born April 23, 1828, died March 13, 1905. He was a son of Lorenzo Dow and Susanna Chambers Harmon. Mary Verdaline Harmon nee Sydnor, wife of John William Harmon, was born January 28, 1840 and died April 5, 1914. The first two mentioned were the grandparents of J.
