DINWIDDIE CO., VA - CEMETERIES – Lee Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Henry Lee family graveyard: 1937 Apr. 6 Research made by Dorothy Gray Pilout Cemetery Location: .3 mile southwest of Dinwiddie Court House, Virginia on Route #1, thence 4.1 miles northwest on Route #645, thence .5 mile east of Route #645 on a private lane. Dinwiddie County DATE: About 1840. OWNERS: Henry Lee bought the place from a member of the Scott family. It was inherited by the family of Henry Lee in 1854. It was willed by John Henry Lee in February, 1927 to his son, Harold S. Lee, specifications being made that the graveyard should be reserved for the Lee family, should Harold S. Lee ever sell the place. Harold S. Lee is the present (1937) owner of the graveyard. DESCRIPTION: The Henry Lee graveyard which is located about 50 yards south of the site of the Henry Lee house, has about 25 graves, eight of which are marked by tombstones. It is enclosed by a wire fence, except on the southwest corner where it is bounded by the Scott family graveyard which is square and enclosed by an old fashioned rock wall. The Lee graveyard doesn’t have any shrubs, trees or flowers of any kind. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following is a list of those buried here: No markers: Henry Lee father of J.H. Lee and grandfather of Harold Lee. Mary B.E. Lee wife of Henry Lee Sydney Wells a Confederate veteran Indianna E. Barker Wells wife of Sydney Wells An infant of Sydney and I.E.B. Wells Mrs. Thomas H. Hawkins who is buried by her husband, Thomas H. Hawkins whose grave is marked with a Confederate stone. Members of the Lee family, born since 1865, whose graves are not marked: Carrie Lee a daughter of John H. and Martha Lee Lillian Lee a daughter of J.H. and Martha Lee Lottie Young Lee first wife of Travis Taylor Lee An infant of Travis Taylor Lee and Lottie Young Lee An infant of L.M. Lee An infant of Harold S. and Gertrude Beville Lee The following are the graves with markers: John H. Lee Co. B 1 Va. Res. C.S.A. (The above is a very p lain stone, being a Confederate marker) Martha E. Wife of J.H. Lee March 5, 1845 Feb. 11, 1917 Death is the crown of life. (The above is a plain granite stone about 18 inches high) Thomas H. Hawkins Co. B 53 Va. Inf. C.S.A. (This is a Confederate marker. This Thomas H. Hawkins was not related to the Lee family in any way, but was a very good friend of John Henry Lee, and asked that he might be buried in his family graveyard) C. Y. Lee 1852 – 1924 Charlotte A. Lee 1858 – 1926 (Mr. C.Y. Lee and his wife, Charlotte A. Lee, are buried side by side and their stones are exactly alike, being low granite markers) SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: Mr. Harold S.
