Wheeler family graveyard: 1937 Mar. 12 Research made by Dorothy Gray Pilout Cemetery Location: .2 mile west of Sutherland, Virginia, on Route #460; thence 5.2 miles west on Route #38; thence .4 mile north on Route #611 by a private lane to the Wheeler home; thence 25 yards west to this site. Dinwiddie County DATE: About 1890. OWNERS: The land on which this graveyard is located was sold by S.B. Hamlin and Jane Hamlin, his wife, to James H. Brander in 1846. James T. Brander, Executor of James H. Brander, sold it to Legrand M. Tucker on January 25, 1860. It was next sold to Joseph Burroughs of New York, on June 9, 1870, by Legrand M. Tucker, Elizabeth E. Tucker and R.W. Tucker. Alexander St.C. Wheeler bought it at a Commissioner’s sale on October 15, 1878, and he deeded it to his wife, Sallie B. Wheeler, on April 28, 1882. A deed was made to this place to Victor Wheeler on August 26, 1918, by Mrs. Eddie Wheeler Harmon, Thomas C. Harmon, Harry G. Wheeler, Martha Cox Wheeler, Loula B.B. Wheeler, Allen Wheeler Mayes, D.C. Mayes, Jessie Wheeler Coleman, R.B. Coleman and Hamner B. Wheeler. S. Victor Wheeler is the present owner. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is located a very short distance west of “Denmark” and the Wheeler home is on the edge of the yard and garden. It covers a very small piece of ground, and the side next to the house has a wire fence around it, but it is not enclosed on the other three sides. It does not have any shrubbery, trees or flowers, but has the appearance of the edge of a field, except for the mounds of six graves and the small stones at the head and foot of each grave.
