Powell Cemetery Location: 3 miles west of McKenney, Virginia, Route #40, north side 100 yards to site. Dinwiddie County DATE: 1836. OWNERS: In 1836, Richard Ferguson purchased of Samuel Pryor, a tract of land known as “Ansville”, on the north side of Lew Jones Road, now Route #40. In 1853, Captain Joseph L. White’s wife, Elizabeth P. Ferguson, inherited the home “Ansville”, from her father, Richard Ferguson. DESCRIPTION: “Ansville” was a massive frame house when purchased by Richard Ferguson. It was burned during the War Between the States. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Captain White fought through the Mexican War and in the War Between the States, was wounded in both legs and walked on crutches for several years. In possession of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene White, owners of “Ansville”, is a piece of white satin, twenty inches by nineteen inches, on which are recorded the following facts: A list of Petersburg volunteers who embarked in the service of their country in the war with Great Britian on October 21, 1812, and consecrated their valor at the Battle of Fort Meigs on May 5, 1813; Commanded by Captin Richard McRae: A list of officers and privates, followed by casualties and survivors, July 4, 1849; A general order of discharge, used by Robert Butler, acting assistant, Headquarters District, October 17, 1813. Adjutant General. The following items are taken from White’s old Bible: Joseph L. White, son of Joseph D. White, and Elizabeth P. Ferguson, daughter of Richard and E.M. Ferguison, were married at the house of Joseph D. White, on Thursday evening the 14th. day of October, 1852, by Reverend Horace Stringfellow. Elizabeth P. Ferguson, daughter of Richard and Emily M. Ferguson, was born at White Oak Grove in Dinwiddie County on October 14, 1832, on Sunday morning at 9 o’clock, A.M. The following inscriptions were found on the tombstones in the White Cemetery: In memory of Our Father Joseph L.(or D.) White Born March 30th, 1802 Died Sept. 24, 1885 Mark the perfect man and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace. In loving remembrance of Our Mother Elizabeth P. White Born Oct. 14, 1832 Died July 14, 1892 Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her own works please her at the Gates. Prov. XXXI-31 Joseph L. White Born March 30, 1825 Died Feb. 9th, 1910 Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.
