Will of Samuel Griffin, 1837 - Dinwiddie Co.VA. Will of Samuel Griffin - 1837 (Will Book 2, Page 180, Dinwiddie Co.VA.) In the name of God, Amen. I Samuel Griffin of the County of Dinwiddie and state of Virginia, being in a low state of health, but of perfect soundness of mind and a disposing memory, knowing the uncertainty of life, and certainty of death, do make and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament. (viz:) Item 1st I wish all my just debts to be punctually paid,and the balance of my estate of every description both real and personal, I loan unto my beloved wife Winnefred Griffin during her natural life, for her to support herself and family on, in the way she may think best calculated to advance her own comfort and interest of the estate. Item 2nd After the death of my beloved wife Winefred Griffin I wish all my estate both real and personal of every description as above named to be sold and the proceeds thereof to be distributed in the following manner (viz:), I give unto my son Nelson L. Griffin one hundred dollars out of the proceeds of my estate, to him and his heirs forever. Item 3rd I give and bequeath unto my four daughters Sarah H.Griffin, Mahala Griffin, Mary Griffin, and Joan Winefred Griffin the whole of my estate or the proceeds thereof, both real and personal of every description after the death of my beloved wife Winefred Griffin, and also paying and satisfying the above mentioned one hundred dollars to my son Nelson L. Griffin, to them and their heirs forever, share and share alike.I do hereby constitute and appoint my beloved wife Winefred Griffin executrix to this my last Will and Testament, and wish no inventory and appraisement of my estate and also wish the County Court of Dinwiddie to require no security for her administration, hereby revoking and cancelling all wills heretofore made by me, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof,I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty fourth day of February one thousand eight hundred and thirty six. This last Will and Testament of Samuel Griffin dec'd. was proved by the oaths of Williamson Perkins, Joshua Blick and Philip Madden subscribing witnesses thereto, and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Winefred Griffin executrix therein named, who made oath according to law, and entered into bond in the penalty of two thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs, Certificate is granted her for obtaining a probate of the said will, in due form.
