Will of Edward Hurst, 1785, Elizabeth City County, VA --------------- In the name of God Amen I Edward Hurst of the County of Elizabeth City Virginia, Being Sick & Weak of Body but of Perfect mind and memory, Thanks to Almighty God for the Same, do make and Ordain this to be my last will and Testament in Manner and Form Following, Imprimus - My Will and Desire is that my Land in Warwick County be sold at the Discretion of my Executors Hereafter named, and the Money Arising there from after my Just Debts & Funeral Charge be paid, to be dispos’d of in the Following Manner, Viz. I Desire & Order that a Negroe Boy Such as my wife shall chuse be purchas’d out of part of the said Land Money which Negroe Boy I lend unto my said loving Wife Phebe Hurst During her natural Life, and after Her Decease, I give & Bequeath the said Negroe Boy unto my Son Richard Hawkins Hurst & his Heirs, And the Residue & Remainder of the Money arising from the Sale of the said Lands It is my will & Desire that it be Equally divided between my said Son Richard Hawkins Hurst And my Daughter Elizabeth Parish to them and trier Heirs. Item I give and Bequeath to my grand Daughter Elizabeth parish One Heifer to her and Her Heirs. Item I Order and Desire that One yoke of my Oxen be sold at the Discretion of my Executors to assist to pay my Debts. Item I give and Bequeath unto my Loving Wife Phebe Hurst, Five Pounds Due to me from Thomas Minson for a mare he Purchas’d of me. Item it is my Desire that the Money Due me by Order of Court from the Estate of Lockey Collier & all other Debts Due to me, be Collected as soon as Possible and Apply’d towards the Discharge of my Just Debts. Item I give and Bequeath unto my Loving Wife Phebe Hurst All my Stock of Cattle Except the Cattle already Dispos’d of all my Hoses Hogs and my Crop of Corn and Fother [sic; fodder], Also all my Household & Kitchen Furniture to Her & Her Heirs forever, Lastly I do Nominate my Friend Miles King and my Son in Law John Parish Executors to this my last will and Testament, Revoking & Disannulling all Other Will or Wills Heretofore by me made, In Witness Whereof i have hereunto Sett my Hand & Seal this First Day of October in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred & Eighty Five.
