Will of Phebe Hurst, 1796/1800, Elizabeth City County, VA --------------- In the name of God Amen. the thirtieth day of April 1796. I Pheby Hurst of the County of Elizabeth City being very sick and weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God; therefore calling unto mind the Mortality of my body and Knowing that it is appointed once for all persons to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the hands of Almight God that give it and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in decent Christian Burial at the discretion of my sons, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God, and touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased god to bless me in this life, I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. First. I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel Rowland my house which I now posses and twenty five Acres of land joining the said house. Also I give and bequeath unto my two sons William and Richard Rowlands the ballance of all my land to be equally divided between them and that my three sons [three words illegible] sons shall have free access and liberty of cutting wood or sale timber on part of the said lands so long as they may live. And I give also to my said Sons equal division of all my Negroes, Stock of Cattle and hogs household and Kitchen furniture except one Negroe girl by name Milley which I give and bequeath unto my grand daughter Mary Rowland to her and her heirs forever. Also one young Cow I give unto my said grand daughter such as she may think best & may choose. And also it is my Will and desire that my said grand daughter Mary Rowland may and shall consider the above mentioned house as her home and to enjoy it peaceable and quietly as her home as long as she continues to live a single life. Also I give unto Edward Dulany or his heirs one shilling Sterling. And also to Percivell Crook one shilling sterling. And this I acknowledge to be my last Will and Testament; In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal the day and year above written.
