Virginia June 1773 Samuel Davis estate recorded, and Anne Davis appointed guardian of Oswald Davis, orphan of Samuel Davis, dec'd. Oct. 1777 Clara Davis chose Ann Davis her guardian, the said Ann appointed guardian of Clara orphan of Samuel Davis, dec'd. Apr. 1779 Ordered that the church of South Farnham Parish do bind out Edmund orphan of Abraham Davis according to law. Dec 1780 Ordered that the Church Wardens of South Farnham Parish do bind out Anna (or Ann) Davis, daughter of Abram Davis, dec'd, according to law. May 1782 Ann Davis is allowed 2 barrels of corn and 100 lbs of pork for support of herself and a child. Aug 1783 Suit: Edmund Davis an infant by Ann Davis his mother and next friend against Lenard Chamberlaine, in trespass assault and battery. Plaintiff came by his attorney and defendant being arrested and now called came not therefore ___? considered by the court that the plaintiff recover against defendant his damages which he hath sustained by reason of the premis in the Declaration specified and costs. p. 191, Feb. 1774: Merriwether Smith is granted administrator of the estate of Thos. Cox, dec'd, and along with John Edmundson entered his security and bond as administrator. John Webb, Thomas Cox, Phillip Kidd and John McCain? were made the appraisers of the estate, and ordered to report back to the court. p. 288, Sept. 1775: Sally Cox, orphan of Ambrose Cox, dec'd, chose Wm. Burnell? as her guardian. p. 520, Apr. 1782: Reimbursment was made by the court to a long list of people who had provisions impounded from them by the US Army over the past year, among them was John Cox, from whom 257 grass beef were impounded on Mar. 8, 1781. He was paid for them at 3 (monetary symbol I don't recognize) for each, for a total of 3..8..9. This probably represents pounds, shillings, and pence. p. 398, Aug. 1783: Phebe Cox, orphan of Ambrose Cox, dec'd, chose James Wilson as her guardian. p. 399, Aug. 1783: Wm. Lataine, Thos. Dix, and Jas. Wright are appointed to work with the county surveyor to divide the land of Ambrose Cox, dec'd, among his children and make a report back to the court. Summaries of the entries for Loyd and variations: p. 67, July, 1773 Andrew Crawford vs. Thomas Loyd. This case was heard in front of a jury, which decided that the defendant did detain oxen belonging to the plaintiff, valued at 4 pounds, and assessed damages of 1 shilling. Ordered that the plaintiff recover against defendant the oxen or 4 pounds, together with his damages and also court costs. Very next entry, same date: Thomas Loyd vs Andrew Crawford. Case heard before a jury, which determined that the defendant did not conduct himself is such manner and form as the plaintiff against him declared, therefore the Court ordered that the plaintiff get nothing due to his false "clamor". p. 76, same date: Thomas Loyd, complainant, vs James Emerson, defendant, Chancery case continued till the next court for the witnesses depositions. p. 157, Nov. 1773: Same as above. p. 196, Mar. 1774: Thomas Loyd acknowledged a bill of sale to George Strang or Thang? which was admitted to record. p. 229, May 1774: The Court ordered that Muscoe Garnett pay to John Loyd 50 lbs. of tobacco for attending court 2 days as a witness for him in a suit against Archibald McCall. Ordered that Archibald McCall pay Thomas Loyd 250 lbs. of tobacco for attending court 10 days as a witness for him against Muscoe Garnett. p. 283, June 1775: Ordered the Sheriff to summon John Loyde to appear at the next court to administer the estate of Ruth Loyde, dec'd. p. 286, July 1775: John Loyd, heir at law of Ruth Loyd, dec'd, refused the administration of the estate of his late Mother in favor of John Lee, so it is granted Lee with Reuben Garnett his security and bond. Ordered that John Lale, Richard Noell, Nicholas Faulconer and Nicholas Faulconer, Jr. appraise the estate of Ruth Loyd, and report back to the court. p. 294, Dec., 1775: An inventory and appraisal of Ruth Loyd's estate was returned to court. p. 325, June, 1777: James Loyde vs. George Chapman, suit over a debt, "discontinued, being agreed". p. 364, June 1778: James Loyde vs. George Chapman, suit over a debt, "discontinued, being agreed". p. 427, July 1779: Thomas Loyde vs. James Hayes and Bernard Moore. Case "discontinued being agreed by the parties". p. 431, Aug., 1779: Thomas Loyde vs. James Emerson, Chancery, "this suit abated by defendant's death". p. 470, Mar. 1780: Thomas Loyd is exempted from paying public and county levies, as is also James Loyde. p. 190, Feb. 1774: "On the motion of Archibald Ritchie and his performing what the laws in the like cases require, certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of administration of the estate of John Pagot deceased in due form." "Archibald Ritchie together with John Edmondson (unreadable word) his security ensured unto and acknowledged a bond for the said Archibald's true and faithful administration of the estate of John Pagot dec'd." "Ordered that Erasmus Jones, Christopher Barbee, William Webb and Stephen Munday or any three of them (being first sworn according to law) do appraise the estate of John Pagot, dec'd in current money, and that the administrator return an inventory wherof to the court." Smith's list. p. 518, Apr. 1782 George Bird is on a long list of those whom the court paid this day for items taken for the army. The date of his certificate (or date items were taken), is Sept. 25, 1781, and taken were 2 oxen for 11 days a 4 (?) per day, for a total of 2,,4,,0. p. 403, Aug. 1783, paraphrased: George Bird filed suit for debt of 1 shilling, 3 pence against John Claudas, Sr. The defendant failed to appear, so the court ordered the plaintiff recover against him the amount owed plus court costs. p. 390, Dec., 1778, "The presentment of the Grand Jury against Jasee? Carter. Clerk is dismissed." p. 385, Jan., 1783: "A negroe belonging to Thomas Coates is for reason appearing to the court ordered to be taken off the list of taxables." p. 290, Oct. 16, 1775 Ordered that John Gordon (Taylor) be added to Mr. William Smith's list of tithables. p. 295, Feb. 19, 1776 Ordered that the church warden of St. Anne's Parish do bind out Poyson (hard to read first name, not sure) Gordon, orphan of William Gordon, dec'd, to serve and be provided for according to law. p. 309, Feb. 1777 Phebo ? Gordon with Thomas Fogg, Richard St. John, and Henry Purkins ___? securities and do acknowledge a bond for the said Gordon, for her ___? and faithful administration of the estate of Thomas Gordon, dec'd. Ordered that William Dunn, Evan Davis, Isaac Jordon, and Philip Kidd? or any three of them, they being first duly sworn, do appraise the slaves, if any, and personal estate of Thomas Gordon, dec'd, and that the administrators return an inventory thereof to the Court. p. 324, June, 1777 The Inventory of Thomas Gordons estate was this day returned and recorded. p. 327, June 1777 On the motion of Rachel Gordon, the administration of the estate of her dec'd husband, John Gordon, is granted her. p. 334, Aug. 1777 Margaret Gordon orphan of William Gordon,, dec'd, chose William Dunn her guardian. p. 337, Oct. 1777 An inventory of the estate of John Gordon, dec'd, was this day returned and recorded. p. 354, May 18, 1778 An inventory of the estate of William Gordon, dec'd, was this day returned and recorded. p. 374, Sept. 1778 William Gordon's administrative account was returned and recorded. p. 385, Nov. 1778 William Young (Son?) and Josiah Minton versus Rachel Gordon, administrator of the estate of John Gordon, dec'd. The defendant having failed to give (count?) or security, it's ordered that she deliver up to the complainants the estate of the said dec'd. p. 406, June, 1779 Ordered that William Young, Thos. Wood, Leroy Daingerfield and James Banks or any three of them do settle Margaret Gordon's Guardian's account and reprot their proceedings to the court. p. 407 June 1779 A bond from Rachel Gordon and James Emondson to William Young and Josiah Minter was proved by the witnesses thereto and is recorded. p. 517, Apr. 15, 1782 "The Court proceeds to recieve the claims against the public on account of impresments made by all persons for horses, provisions, and all other necessities impressed or taken for public service." (A long list follows of individuals, giving date of certificate, to whom given, for what and the value set by the court. Sept. 6, 1781, Rachel Gordon for 180 Grass Beef @ 3 , total due 2..5..0 p. 385, Nov., 1778: An indenture of apprenticeship between the (Gentlemen?) Justices of Essex County for William Loyde and Alexander (name is illegible--may start with an M or W) is acknowledged and approved by the court and ordered to be certified. p. 498, Mar. 19, 1781: "An inventory and appraisment of the estate of Samuel Coates, dec'd, being returned, is ordered to be recorded." Partial list of the approximately 50 entries: p. 484 May, 1780 Achilles Garnett served on a Grand Jury p. 226, May 1774 John Garnett served on a Grand Jury p. 280 Apr. 1775 Indenture (deed) from John Samuel and Catherine his wife, to Reuben Garnett p. 406 Aug. 1783 Reuben Garnett, plaintiff, against Isaac Hawes (or Harris) defendant, lawsuit over a debt, plaintiff won. Also Reuban against Thomas Fogg, debt of 22 pounds, 1 pence. p. 338 Oct., 1777 Henry Garnett appointed guardian of Lucy Garnett, orphan of Francis Garnett deceased, with Augustine Garnett providing security. p. 2, early in 1773 Henry Garnott appointed an appraiser of Francis Davis' estate. I can tell from the index that many of the entries are lawsuits. Some are appointments to positions, including Captain. One says "Garnett's mark on his flour barrels". One is "Grand Jury vs. Garnett." Another has to do with a mill, others with roads, dowers of slaves, commissions, deeds. There is a list of "Claims" that give first names---Henry, Judith, Augustine, Muscoe, Reuben, Margaret, Austin. There is also a reference to a will. Index entries for James Roy are an estate entry, 2 lawsuits, and a will proved. Index entries for Dyke include Mr. Dyke vs. wife; a deed; and Dyke vs. Dyke. There are also index entries for Carter including a will; Daniel Carter added to the tax list; and Grand Jury vs. Carter. Index entries for Hoskins include deeds; one about a draw bridge; and others. p. 306, Jan., 1777, a deed from John Gordon and Rachel his wife to P. Clements. p. 368, Thomas Cox certified Apr. 4, 1780, and given restitution for supplies to the army for 300 beef cattle, at 3 pounds, 15. Index entries for Loyd include approximately 16 entries, including: p. 406, Aug. 1783 Martin Sullivan sued John Loyde, son of Thomas, over a debt. The suit was discontinued. p. 416, Aug. 1783 Thomas Williamson sued John Loyde, son of Thomas, and judgement awarded the plaintiff. Some of the entries are lawsuits. Other entries say, "Loyd to be summoned; Loyd exempt; Loyd apprenticeship; Loyd administrator of estate; Loyd inventory. p. 238: May Court, 1774 This was a court case in which a John Johnson was suing an Andrew Gatewood, Administrator of the estate of Wm. Bray, but none of Johnson's witnesses appeared, so he lost the case and had to pay Gatewood's court expenses. Following that entry, there were about 6 individuals fined, among them: "James Lingo having been summoned as a witness for John Johnson in his suit against Andrew Gatewood, Adm. of the estate of William Bray, dec'd, and failing to appear although solomnly called he is therefore fined the sum of 350 pounds of tobacco to the use of the said John Johnson." p. 247: June Court, 1774 "On reasons appearing to the court James Lingo is discharged from the fine imposed upon him at the last court at the instance of John Johnson for not appearing in his suit as witness against Bray's administration." p. 500: May21, 1781 "Caty Lingo the wife of James Lingo a soldier in the Continental Army is allowed four barrels of corn and two hundred pounds of __ pork for the support of herself and three children for one year last past which is ordered to be certified."
