(The prior entry was a case that Hannah Davis lost--she had sued James Sullivan over a debt. James had to pay his witness in a similar fashion.) p. 73, Feb. 1785: "The last will and testament of Mary Coates, dec'd, was presented into court, Heritage Howerton the Executor therein named who made oath thereto as the law directs and being proved by John Voss and William Voss, two of the witnesses thereto the same is ordered to be recorded, he the said Heritage with Richard St. John has security having entered into and acknowledged a bond for the same. " p. 147, Sept. 19, 1785: "An inventory and appraisment of the estate of Mary Coates dec'd being returned is ordered recorded." p. 126, July 18, 1785: "Alexander Bowmar for reasons apparent to the court is excused from public and county services." p. 181, Feb. 20, 1786: "The last will and testament of Alexander Bomar, deceased, was offered to proof by John Brooks the Executor therin named and the same being proved by Richard Fuller and William Covington, Jr., two of the witnesses thereto and the said Executor is ordered to be recorded. The said John Brooks together with John Evans his security, having entered into and acknowledging a bond for the same according to law." William Cheaney, Thomas Bush, Thomas Voss, and William Voss were named appraisers of the estate, and ordered to report back to court with an inventory. p. 213, June 19, 1786: The inventory and appraisal of Alexander Bomar's estate is returned and ordered recorded. p. 59, Oct. 1784: "James Younger, plaintiff vs. John Jones & James Jones, defendants in a case of Trespass, Assault & Battery: This day came as well the plaintiff by Spencer Roan his attorney as the defendant James Jones by John Warden his attorney, and the Sheriff having made return of the writ in this suit as to the defendant John in these words to wit, " 'John Jones' not found, Merriday Brown, DL?" of the said defendant altho solemnly called yet failing to appear on the motion of the plaintiff an attachment is awarded him against the estate of the said defendant John for his damages which he hath sustained by reason of the trespass assault & battery in the declaration mentioned of costs returnable to the next Court & on the motion of the defendant James time is given him till next court to impel of him to answer to the plaintiff's bill." p. 500, May 21, 1785 Will of Henry Carter dec'd was offered to proof by Lucretia Carter and Samuel Carter the Executors made oath and proved by John Evans and Wm. Gatewood, two of the witnesses, ordered to be recorded and security and bond provided. Order appraisal of negroes, if any, and personal estate of Henry Carter and return inventory to court. p. 285: Essex January Court, 1787 Orders that it be certified that Caty Lingo is the widow of James Lingo, a soldier who was in and killed in the Continental Army about the year 1780 at the Seige of Ninety Six, Williamson Hardy having made oath that he saw the body of the said James after he was killed. p. 292: Essex February Court, 1787 On the motion of Caty Lingo, the widow and _____ of James Lingo, deceased, who was a Soldier in the Continental Army, and was killed at the siege of Ninety Six, it is ordered to be certified that the said Caty Lingo has three children and now labouring under very indigent circumstances. p. 345: Essex June 18th Court, 1787 It is ordered to be certified that Caty Lingo is the widow of James Lingo formerly a Soldier in the Continental Army who was killed at the siege of NinetySix as appears by the testimony of Williamson Hardy who saw the said Lingo after he was killed; that the said Caty Lingo has three small children and is in indigent circumstances and it also appears from the testimony of Doctor Mace Clements that the said Lingo was a soldier at said siege; and ordered that the same be certified.
