All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Beverly Watson http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00029.html#0007196 September 29, 2018, 9:33 am Written: May 31, 1766 Deed – Thomas Reeves & Sarah to William Gatewood Essex County, Virginia Deed Book 30, p. 111-112 31 May 1766 THIS INDENTURE made this XXXIst day of May in the Year of Our Lord One thousand seven hundred and Sixty six and in the fourth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord George the Third King of Great Britain France and Ireland defender of the Faith &c BETWEEN Thomas Reeves and Sarah his Wife of the County of Spotsylvania of the one part and William Gatewood of the County of Essex Carpenter of the other part WTNESSETH that the said Thomas Reeves and Sarah his wife for and in consideration of the sum of Twenty pounds Current money to him the said Thomas in hand paid by the said William the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge they the said Thomas and his wife Have Granted bargained and sold aliened and confirmed and by these presents Do Grant bargain and sell alien and confirm unto the said William Gatewood his heirs and assigns for ever a certain messuage Tenement or Tract of Land Situate lying and being on the east side of the main road that goes by Piscataway Church in South farnham parish containing by estimation one hundred and twenty five acres more or less and is the moiety of the Tract of Land which John Reeves by his last will and Testament devised to his sisters Patience Gatewood and Ann Reeves and descended to the afsd Sarah party hereto from the said Ann Reeves (being her only child and heir at Law by her Husband Francis Atwood deceased) and also all Trees woods and underwoods commons pastures profitts Commodities Messuages Hereditaments Ways Waters and appurtenances whatsoever to the said Messuage or Tenement or Tract of Land abovementioned belonging or in any wise appertaining and also the Reversion and Reversions Remainder and Remainders Rents and services of the said premises and of every part thereof and all the estate right title Interest claim and demand whatsoever of them the said Thomas Reeves and Sarah his wife of in and to the said Messuage Tenement and premises and every part thereof TO HAVE AND TO HOLD THE said Messuage or Tenement or Tract of Land and all and singular the premises above mentioned and every part and parcel thereof with the appurtenances unto the said William Gatewood his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of the said William Gatewood his heirs and assigns for ever And the said Thomas Reeves and Sarah his wife for themselves and their heirs the said Messuage Tenement or Tract of Land and premises and every part thereof against them and their heirs and against all and every other person or persons whatsoever to the said William Gatewood his heirs and assigns shall and will Warrant and for ever defend by these presents In Witness whereof the parties first above named to this Indenture have hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals the day and year first above written. Test John Lee Clk George the third by the grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith &c To Charles Dick and John Stewart Charles Yates Gentlemen Greeting Whereas Thomas Reeves and Sarah Reeves his wife of the County of Spotsylvania have by their deed of Bargain and sale bearing date the thirty first day of May one thousand seven hundred and sixty six conveyed unto William Gatewood of the County of Essex a certain Tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Essex aforesaid and Whereas the said Sarah is unable to Travel to our County Court of Essex to make acknowledgement thereof THEREFORE We commission you or any two or more of you to repair to the said Sarah and that privily and apart from her Husband you take such acknowledgement as she shall be willing to make touching the premises and examine her whether she makes such acknowledgment freely and willingly without the threats or compulsion of her said Husband and whether she is willing the said deed together with her acknowledgement may be Recorded in our said County Court of Essex and that you certify us thereof under your hands and seals at the same time sending this Writ Witness John Lee Junr Clerk of our said Court at the Court house the 3.d day of June 1766 in the 6th year of our Reign, John Lee Junr. This is to certify that We John Stewart and Charles Yates agreeable to the order of the Worshipful Court of Essex have examined privily and apart Sarah the wife of Thomas Reeves touching her consent and agreement to the deed mentioned in this order and that she acknowledged to have executed the same of her own free will and consent and without any compulsion whatsoever Given under our hands and Seals in the County of Spotsylvania this Eighth day of July 1766.
