Roane/Allen Deed, 1801 - Essex Co. VA Deed Bk. 35 Page 358, 359 The Commonweath of Virginia to Wm Latane, Thomas Dix, & Sthreshly Rennolds gentlemen Justices of Essex County greeting Whereas Thomas Roane and Henrietta his wife by their certain indenture of bargain and sale bearing the date the 11th day of October 1800 have sold and conveyed unto Thomas Allen for a consideration of eighty four pounds seventeen shillings Virginian currency a certain piece or parcel of land situated in the parish of South Farnham and in the county of Essex containing by a late survey eighty three acres and bounded as described in said deed and whereas the said Henrietta cannot conveniently travel To our County Court of Essex to make acknowledgement of the said conveyance, therefore we do give unto you, or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgement of the said conveyance which the said Henrietta shall be willing to make before the conveyance aforesaid contained in the indenture which is hereunto annexed:- and we do therefore command you that you do personally go to the said Henrietta and receive her acknowledgement of the same and examine her privately and apart from the said Thomas Roane her husband, whether she doth the same freely and voluntarily without persuasions or threats and whether she be willing that the same should be recorded in our county court of Essex aforesaid and when you have received her acknowledgement examined her as aforesaid that you distinctly and openly certify us thereof in our said county court under your seals sending then there the said indenture and this Writ. Witness: John P. Lee clerk of our said county court, the 22 day of Jan, 1801 and in the 25th year of the Commonwealth. John P. Lee Essex Pursuant to the within Commission to us directed we have examined the within named Henrietta privily and apart from her husband who declares that she freely and willingly relinquishes all her right of dower and any other right she hath of and in the lands specified in the deed referred to, and that she is writing the said deed together with this her acknowledgement may be recorded in our county court of Essex-Certified under our hands and seals this 28h day of January and 25b year of the Commonwealth.
