Essex Co., VA Will George Moody, 1765 [1765] Essex County Records. [ page 379.] In the name of God Amen I George Moody of Essex County being sick and weak in body but sound and disposing mind and memory thanks be to God for the same, Do make and Declare the following writing to be my last will and testament, that is to say, I lend to my beloved wife Sarah during her natural life or widowhood all my estate both real and personal and if she marries again then I desire she may have the proceeds no other part thereof than what the law will entitle her to. Item. I lend to my son Jeremiah during his natural life the tract of land he now lives upon bounded by the spring branch down to the main branch of Hoskins Run and up the run which divides this and the land of Upshaw, and along the line of this and Sherwoods land till it comes to a new mark on Hickory tree a corner between this and the land hereby given to my son Thomas and from the said Hickory a straight line by a crooked Persimmon tree marked in the cornfield to a small black walnut tree another corner and from thence along crooked line to a small red oak a few yards below my spring and after his decease and the decease of his wife Elizabeth to whom I lend the same if she should survive my said son Jeremiah, during her widowhood. I give the said tract of land with the appurtances unto my Grandson Lewis the son of said son and daughter Jeremiah and Elizabeth to him and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten and for want of such heirs the I give the same my son Jeremiah and his heirs forever. Item. I give to my son Thomas that part of my land that is ajoining to the land of Jonathan Sherwood, Gatewood, Allen and the land that was Hunts as far as the new made line by the road to the small corner walnut tree mentioned above to him my said son Thomas and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten and for want of such issue I give the same to my son William and his heirs forever. Item. I give to my son William and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten all the rest of my land with the appurtances and for want of such heirs I give the same to my son Thomas and his heirs forever. Item. I lend to my son John and his wife Frances during their life the several goods and chattels that belong to me which is now in their possesion and after their decease I give the same with the increase and chattels to the children of the said John and Frances and to their heirs and assigns forever. Item. I give and bequeath my eldest son Jeremiah and to his heirs and assigns one shilling as his full share of all the rest of the estate and all the rest and residue of my estate estate both real and personal I give to my two sons Thomas and William and to their heirs and assigns. And I appoint them my said sons Thomas and William my whole and sole executors of this my last will.
