John Hereford was born on Feb. 3, 1758, on the Potomac River, in Fairfax County, Virginia, and was raised in Leesburg, Virginia. He married twice, his first wife being Betty Patterson, whose parents came from Ireland and whom he married on July 22, 1734, in Fairfax County. There were six children of this marriage. He married second on April 8, 1804, Sarah Mausey, of the same county. By this marriage there were ten children, among whom was Ammon Barnes Hereford, and the record says that Barns or Barnes was the name of the soldier's grandmother. In the record of the marriage of the children of John Hereford we find John Wesley Hereford, son of John Hereford, born Sept. 24, 1790, married his cousin, Juliette Harrison Hereford, daughter of Francis Hereford and Ann Catherine Hereford of Fauquier County, Virginia, on March 18, 1818.
