Crockett's Western Battalion Fairfax County I do hereby certify that James Hughes a serjeant in Col. Joseph Crockett's Western Battalion drew no pay from me from the first day of December 1780 until the Regiment was discharged which was the 22nd day of December 1782 which pay I think he was entitled to, with depreciation, and likewise do certify that he lost his leg in the service. Given under my hand this 12th July 1787. William Cherry, late Capt. of Pay Ment W. B. I do with the advice of the Council hereby certify that James Hughes, aged about 39 years, late a Serjeant in the Crockett's Regiment whose pay was at the rate of 36 pounds, was disabled in the service of the United States while guarding the _____ Troops and afterwards the Barracks, by a wound to his right leg which necessitated the amputation of his right leg above the knee, and that he is allowed the sum of 15 pounds yearly: which allowance is to commence from the 1st day of January 1787. Given under my hand as Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, at Richmond, this 17th day of September, 1787. Signed: Beverley Randolph T. Meriwether 15 September 1782--William Hickman, administrator of Hughes' estate presented a warrant for 19 pounds, 5 shillings for amount due the estate. No date was given for Hughes' death.
