He served for three yeans in a Virginia regiment under Colonels Morgan and William Brent. She married James Strother May 8, 1788, in Fairfax County, Virginia. Her name before marriage was Elizabeth Battle Morton and she was the daughter of "Parson" Morton. James Strother died April 27, 1844, leaving the following children: James P. Strother, of Smyth County, Virginia; Jane Strother Ewell, of Russell County, Virginia; and Nancy Whitten Strother, of Tazewell County, Virginia. James Strother made oath as to his revolutionary service in Russell County, September 4, 1811. Harry Smith of Russell County declared that he was half brother of James Strother and was aged 68 years July 9, 1842. Peggy Smith declared that she was 66 years of age, July 9, 1842, and that she was a half sister of James Strother. Mary James Strother, widow of Anthony Strother, and mother of the soldier, James Strother, married for her second husband in 1771, Colonel Henry Smith, in King George County, Virginia, by whom she was the mother of the affiants, Harry and Peggy Smith. Mary James Strother Smith was born in 1736 and died in 1822. Her first husband, Anthony Strother was born in 1710 and died in 1765. Anthony Strother had another son by his first wife (Betheland Storke Strother). This Benjamin Strother, half brother of the pensioner, was also in revolutionary service, first in the Virginia State Navy and later in the land forces.
