Elisha (X) Barton of said county, aged 76, declares he entered service in 1781 for six months as a volunteer in the militia in a company of cavalry from Fauquier County where he then resided. He marched under Capt. William Triplett to the Court House of Fauquier County where he was stationed seven weeks awaiting a call to join the army. The company was designed to defend those places where danger was apprehended from sudden incursions of the enemy. They were ordered to march to Falmouth near Fredericksburg on the Rappahannock. They remained about three weeks and were then ordered to march to Bowling Green on the great road leading from Richmond to Fredericksburg. They wwere stationed there a short time and then ordered to march to Yorktown. He remained there until discharged. Samuel Gibson was lieutenant and John Barker was ensign. The chief commander of the forces was ___ Triplett. The company never joined the main army. He was discharged a short time before the surrender of Cornwallis. He was born in Fauquier Co., Va., in 1757 and moved to Bedford County two years after the close of the war. Elisha Barton of Bedford Co., Va., private in the company of Capt. Triplett in the Virginia line for six months, was placed on the Virginia pension roll at $25 per annum under the Act of 1832. Certificate 23926 was issued 28 April 1834.
