JACKSON, One of the oldest and most respected colored citizens of this city, died at 1 o'clock this morning at his residence, 2104 Sixth avenue. He was born a slave in Fauquier county, Va., in 1828. He spent 39 years in slavery, a body guard to Colonel Ashby, whom he attended during the Civil war, and up until the time of his master's death. He then with his wife and many others, came to Altoona in 1867. He remained for a short time and then went to Ohio, where he remained until 1880, when he returned to this city, where he has since resided. He followed the business of a scavenger up until the 19th day of August, 1904, at which time he met with an accident which necessitated the amputation of his left foot, the operation being performed by Drs. Robison, Bloomhart and Shaeffer. In politics he was a Republican. He was kind and liberal to the needy and a faithful husband and a kind and loving father. He was united in marriage to Miss Annie King of Stafford county, Va., on April 7, 1855, the children being born to this union. This venerable couple celebrated their golden wedding in 1905. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, and the following children: Mrs. George N. Alexander, Alice M. and J. Otto, at home, and two adopted children, Mrs. Eva Adkins of Cleveland, O., and Mr. John Jackson of Pittsburg. One brother, Charles Jackson, of Cleveland, O., and two grandchildren. He was a consistent member of Mt. Zion Baptist church at Fifth avenue and Twenty-second street, at which place services will be conducted on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30.
