FLOYD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Howell Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Howell Cemetery: 1937 Dec. 7 Research made by Genevieve H. Peters Cemetery Location: About 4 miles south of Floyd, Virginia, on what is now the Francis Harmon land. Floyd County DATE: 1868, date of oldest grave. OWNERS: This is a public burying ground, but it goes by the name of the Howell Cemetery in the community. DESCRIPTION: This cemetery is on the old Colonel P. T. Howell land, now owned by Francis Harmon. There is no record of this land having been bought for a cemetery. It was given by Henry Carter and was a private cemetery for a long time. Colonel P.T. Howell was once the owner of the old house below the cemetery. The cemetery is a lot about ninety by 100 feet, situated on a hill overlooking the surrounding country. It is just above the old P.T. Howell house. The lot is enclosed by a wire fence and is kept in a very fair condition. The oldest and most prominent citizens of this community are buried here. It is said that Henry Carter and his wife were the first persons buried here. The verse on Major Austin Harmon’s stone is most unusual, being “God’s finger touched him and he slept’.
