FLOYD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Old Jacksonville Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Old Jacksonville cemetery: 1937 Nov. 24 Research made by Genevieve Peters Cemetery Location: South of the town of Floyd, Virginia, on Route #8, back of the Dickerson Mill. Floyd County DATE: 1833, date of oldest grave. OWNERS: This cemetery is now the property of the people of Floyd County. It has been a public burying ground. David Kitterman first owned the land. On Feb. 10, 1852, he sold to the trustees of the Jacksonville Burying Ground. Recorded in Deed Book F page 467. DESCRIPTION: The cemetery is a lot covering about one and one fourth acre of land and about one hundred by two hundred feet. It is no longer used for a cemetery and is in somewhat of a neglected condition. It is enclosed by a high wire fence and the gate is kept locked. The graves in the front of the cemetery are those of the slaves. There are no markers or dates on them, and the land is now flat as if there were no graves there. There is a very peculiar stone over the grave of Isabella Headen 1842-1844. Across the grave there is a large block or stone, on four legs, which completely covers the grave. It is about four by seven feet. A yankee was once buried in this cemetery. A few years ago his body was taken up and moved to some other place. A few military buttons were all that was found in the casket. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Some of the very oldest people in Floyd are buried in this cemetery. The majority of the soldiers killed during the War Between the States are here, also the slaves are buried in front of the cemetery. Two of the oldest residents of the town, Mrs. Virginia Peterman and Mrs. James R. Sowers stated that they remember the soldiers being buried here, and attended most of the burials. A.M. Leake, a Revolutionary soldier is buried here. Some of the inscriptions from the stones are: Sacred to the Memory of Isabell daughter of J.B. and M.C. Headen who was born 18th Dec. 1842 and departed this life 26th July 1844 The little babe is gone to rest, To dwell with God, Forever blest, Its infant tongue will always praise, A savior’s love, redeeming grace.
