FLUVANNA COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Martin Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Martin cemetery: 1937 June 1 Research made by R. E. Hannum Cemetery Location: Property now called “Stonehurst” is just across the Rivanna River from Union Mills, which is 1 mile west of Union Mills, Virginia, and about 200 yards west of Route #616. Fluvanna County DATE: Earliest date on stone is 1820. OWNERS: Present “Stonehurst” was owned by Martin King for whom the road from Woodridge to Union Mills (it was later extended) was named. Present owner is Miss M. M. Armstrong. (1937) DESCRIPTION: The cemetery is in the yard back of the house. It is said Martin King is buried here but his name does not appear on any of the markers. However, there is one stone the same size and shape as Mary King’s with markings on it. But the stone is so defaced and weathered that these can not be made out. There are four other markers that are just rough field stone. Two new ones have been placed within the last two years. The care taker on the place told me they were brought by “some one away off” so there is not much of a possibility of tracing them. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Erected in memory of Mary W. King Who died June 1st 1848 age 16 months. (the “4” is backwards) Mary Thomas King 1820 – 1881 Wray Digs Strange 1884 - 1884 SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informant: Miss M. M.
