This day Thomas Clements aged Sixty six years resident of this County personally appeared in Court and made the following declaration on Oath. That he entered the service of the United States as a private Soldier in the War of the Revolution sometime in the month of January in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy six, that he belonged to a company commanded by Captain Duett alias Jewett of the seventh Regiment commanded by Colonel Lewis of the Virginia line and Continental establishment, that he remained in Camp from the month of March one thousand seven hundred and seventy six until the month of October of the same year at which time he returned home on a Sick furlough, which furlough was renewed from time to time until his time of service expired which was two years that he is in reduced circumstances and needs the aid of his Country for support which fact as respect said service was supported by the Testimony of Thomas Shores and it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that the said Thomas Clements served in the Revolutionary War as aforesaid against the common En___ [rest of word cut off] for the term of Two years aforesaid, and that he is by reason of his reduced circumstances in life in need of assistance from his County for support and has therefore a just claim to a Pension in the manner prescribed by an Act of Congress entitled "An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land and Naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary War" the same is ordered to be Certified to the Secretary of the Department of War [Transcriber's note: The next document in the file is an affidavit by Thomas Clements, age 66, dated October 24, 1820, which repeats the above-stated assertions regarding his Revolutionary War service, adding that the captain's first name was Matthew and spelling the captain's last name "Jouit." This affidavit also adds that Mr. Clements does not have "any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed to wit one mare one Cow and Calf one small heifer seven Hogs one pine Table one pine cupboard six pewter dishes one pewter Bason six knives & six forks one Jug one bottle one pot one oven four chairs one pail one piggin two smoothing Irons and set candle moulds one Chest five hoes two ploughs and two axes."] ---------------------------------------- State of Virginia } ss. County of Fluvanna } On the 28th day of April in the year eighteen hundred and forty five, personally appeared before the Justices of the County Court of Fluvanna, James Clements a resident of the said County of Fluvanna aged 39 years who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his Oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed July 7th: 1838, entitled, "An Act granting half pay and pensions to Certain Widows:" That his Mother Mary Clements was the Widow of Thomas Clements a Soldier of the Revolution, who served in the 7th Virginia Regiment for two years ending in March 1778 and received therefor a pension from the United States up to a few months before his under the Act of Congress of March 18th: 1818:- He further declares that his Mother Mary Clements was duly married to the said Thomas Clements on the [blank] day of October in the year Seventeen hundred and ninety two, That his Father Thomas Clements, the husband of his Mother the said Mary Clements died on the twenty fourth day of October in the year eighteen hundred and thirty two, that the marriage between his Father the said Thomas Clements and his Mother the said Mary Clements was not had and solemnized prior to his leaving the Service; but that the marriage took place previous to the first of January seventeen hundred and ninety four viz: at the time above stated. He further declares that his Mother the said Mary Clements died on the 28th: day of June in the year eighteen hundred and forty. James Clements his X mark ---------------------------------------- Know all men by these presents that we Thomas Clements and Stephen Clements are held and firmly bound to Henry Lee Esq. Governor or Chief Magistrate of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of Fifty pounds Current money to be paid to the sd. Governor or to his Successors in office for the use of the Commonwealth. To the payment whereof well and truly to be made we bind ourselves and each of us our and each of our heirs executors and administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this tenth day of November one thousand seven hundred and ninety two. The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be had and Solemnized between the above bound Thomas Clements and Molly Johnson- If therefore there is no lawful cause to obstruct the said Marriage then the above obligation to be void or else to remain in full force and virtue. Sealed and delivered} Thomas Clements In presence of } Stephen Clements John Timberlake I Abraham Shepherd, jun., Clerk of the County Court of Fluvanna, in the State of Virginia, do hereby certify, that the above is a true Copy of a bond on file in my office with the exception of the date which is expressed in the bond, in fair legible figures as follows "1792" And I further depose and say that I hold the Office of the Clerk of the County Court of the said County of Fluvanna in the State of Virginia, and that the above is a true Copy of a bond now on file in my office with the exception above named as certified by me. Abra: Shepherd jr Clerk of Fluvanna County Court- April 29th: 1845 ---------------------------------------- Virginia to wit At a Court of Monthly Session held for Fluvanna County on monday the 28th: day of April 1845 Satisfactory evidence being exhibited to the Court that Thomas Clements a pensioner of the United States departed this life in the said County on the 24th: day of October in the year 1832 and furthermore that Mary Clements deceased was the widow of the said Thomas Clements and that she the said Mary Clements was a resident of the said County at and before the date of her and that she departed this life in the said County on the 28th: day of June in the year 1840 and that she left the following children her survivors viz: Thomas, James, William, Frances, Martha and Nancy all of whom are residents of the said County of Fluvanna. It is ordered that these facts be entered of record and Certified to all those whom it may concern. A true copy from the records of the said Court.
