WILL OF JOHN HOLLAND, 1773 - GOOCHLAND COUNTY, VA In the name of God Amen, I John Holland of Goochland County being sick & weak of Body, but of Perfect sense & memory, thanks to the Almighty for the same, do make & ordain this my last will & Testament in manner & form following Viz.t Inprimus, I lend to my beloved wife Martha Holland during her natural Life the three following slaves Viz.t Jacob, Nell, & Patt, I also give her one Negro Boy Named Will, at her own disposial, with one white Horse, side saddle & Bridle, one Feather Bed & furniture,I large Iron pott, one dozed Pewter plates & two dishes, I also give her six head of Cattle, & twenty head of Hogs with Liberty to remain in my masion House & to work her negroes on the Plantation where I now dwell, provided she allows my son Nathaniel the Liberty of working his Negroes on part of the s.d plantation, Item, I give & Bequeath to my son John Holland Twenty Shillings sterling besides what I gave him in my Life time, Item, I give & bequeath to my Daughter Judith Parrish Twenty Shillings besides what I gave her in my Life time, Item, I give & Bequeath to my son Hezekiah Holland one Negro Man named Jacob after my wifes decease, Item, I give & Bequeath to my Daughter Martha Graves & the heirs of her Body Lawfully begotten one Negroe Boy named Reubin & one Negroe Girl named Jane - Item, I give and bequeath to my son Nathaniel Holland & his heirs forever the tract of Land whereon I now Live containing two hundred Acres which I bought of John Moss, lying on the Little Bird Creek with one Negro Girl named Milley, I also give & bequeath to my s.d son Nathaniel Holland two Negro Women Named Patt, & Nell, with all their Increase after this date, except the first live child the wench Nell shall bear, which I give to my daughter Lucy Holland, I further Bequeath to my son Nathaniel Holland one Negroe Lad Named David, one feather Bed & furniture, 1 Pewter dish, six plates & 1 Bason four head of Cattle, 1 Black Walnut Table & my Desk Item, I lend unto my Daughter Alice Nash & her heirs lawfully begotten, one Negroe named Meridith & two negroe Girls named Agga, & Sylva, & in failure of such Issue to descend to my son Nathaniel Holland & my Daughter Lucy Holland, & their Heirs forever, & my Will is that if my Daughter Alice should die & leave her Children that the s.d Negroes be Hired out for the maintainance of the s.d Children 'till they shall arrise at Lawfull age or Marry -- Item, I give & Bequeath to my Daughter Lucy Holland & her heirs Lawfully begotten the four following Slaves Viz.t Rachel, Gibbey, Sue & Jolley, I also give her the first live child that the wench Nell bears that is lent to my Wife Martha Holland & Afterwards given to my son Nathaniel Holland, I further bequeath to her one Negroe Boy named Randolph to her & her heirs Lawfully begotten forever, with one black Horse named Pocolate one feather bed & furniture four head of Cattle, one dozen Pewter plates, one Bason, one Dish & ten spoons - but if my s.d Daughter Lucy Holland should die without Lawfull heir my will is that the slaves &c, I have given her descend to my son Nathaniel Holland & his Lawfull heirs - my will further is that should my son Nathaniel Holland die without heir that his whole Legacy fall to my Daughter Lucy Holland & her Lawfull heirs & should they both die without such heirs then it is my desire that each of their Legacy's descend to my son Hezekiah Holland & his lawfull heirs - Item, I leave two Negroe men Named Frank, & Daniel, with all the residue of my Estate not heretofore mentioned to be sold by my Executors hereafter mentioned & Apply'd towards the Payments of my Just debts, & should there be any surplus remaining I desire it may be given to my Son Hezekiah Holland or to his heirs - Lastly, I Constitute & Appoint my beloved Wife Martha Holland Executrix & my two friends George Payne Sen.r & Josias Payne Sen.r Executors of this my last Will & Testament, In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & Seal this 7th day of June 1773 - John Holland....Seal Signed Sealed & Delivered by the Testator as his last Will & Testament in the presence of us who subscrib'd the same in his presence & at his request Solomon Williams James Williams Geo.
