Pursuant to an order of the County Court of Franklin made the 7 December 1857 
on motion of the heirs of Joseph Bowsman decd to lay off and assign to his 
widow Ann Bowsman her dower in the lands whereof the said Joseph Bowsman died 
seized. We the undersigned three of the Commissioners named in said order have 
proceedeed to lay off and assign to the said Anna Bowsman the quantity of 
thirty five acres as one equal third part of all the lands held by her deceased 
husband Josiah Bowsman at the time of his death having regard to quatity as 
well as quality as and for her dower by the following bounds and meters viz: 
Beginning at two Sorrelwoods in the old line, thence off a new line N 7 W 26 po 
to a white oak, a little below the sping, N 12 1/2 to 32 1/2 po to a white plum 
tree So 74 E 76 po crossing the plantation to a small black gum S 58 E 56 po to 
a spanish oak on the east side of the Turnpike S 27 W 30 poles to pointers on 
the west side of said road thence with Jacob Altick's line N 78 1/2 W 11 1/2 po 
to the beginning all of which is repectfully submitted.

At a Court held for Franklin County the 1st day of February 1858, This report 
of the assignment of Dower to Anna Bowsman in the lands belonging to the Estate 
of Josiah Bowsman Decd was confirmed and admitted to be recorded.

Additional Comments:
Joseph Bowsman was born ca 1796 in Franklin Co., VA to George Bowsman & 
Elizabeth Pool. He married his first cousin Anna E. Altick 22 March 1827 in 
Franklin Co., VA. She was the daughter of Daniel Altick & Elizabeth Bowsman. 
Joseph died in 1857 and Anne in 1860. They were parents of twelve children: 
Daniel, Elizabeth, Wiley, Sarah, Jane, Josiah, Bethenia, Adam, Parthenia, 
Jacob, Julia and John
