Description of Map of Indian Tribes, 1725 - Franklin Co. VA I thought this finding in a book "The Catawba Indians: The River People" by: Douglas Summers Brown published 1966. It is no longer in print, and I am reading the only copy in TN (from the Kingston Library). So many people ask on the surname lists for Cherokee connections....but the Catawba was the link of trading between VA and Charles Town, S.C. The Cherokee's were enemies of the colonies, when the Catawba were allies. Here is the map from 1725 linking VA and Charlestown, and shows the various tribes. The village of Nasaw (Catawba) was the center of trading, and a colonial highway. It states William Byrd I started trade with the Catawba before 1690. The square is Virginia, the boat is Charles Town, and the center is Catawba Village. TT See map at http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/franklin/maps/map1.jpg Submitted by Tammy S.
