FREDERICK COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Middletown Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Middletown Cemetery: 1936 Aug. 21 Research made by Robert G. VanMeter Cemetery Location: It is situated on a hill .5 mile west of Middletown, Virginia. Frederick County DATE: 1820. OWNERS: Town of Middletown, Virginia. DESCRIPTION: Middletown Cemetery was established in 1820 and is the present public burying ground of Middletown, Virginia. The grass is mowed regularly and all undergrowth is kept trimmed. The markers are standing up well. In the list of inscriptions will be seen the grave of Mrs. Mary Williamson, whose marker is a wooden slab, well preserved and unpainted, very old and covered with moss, but the most splendid cutting of letters you can see any where today – every letter perfectly plain and neat, and must have been done by an artist. On the marker of Jacob Danner can be seen some bullet holes and the story goes that, during the War Between the States, a Yankee was hiding behind this stone and a Rebel standing by the old Methodist Church in Middletown (.5 mile away) shot at him with a carbine rifle and hit the stone. The Yankee ran over the hill to Belle Grove and escaped.
