VanMeter Cemetery Location: In Stephens City, Virginia Frederick County DATE: Prior to 1815. OWNERS: Methodist Church. DESCRIPTION: The Old Methodist Grave Yard was a burying place for the Methodist people of Stephen City and was established before 1815. It is not used now, but is well fenced and kept in good condition. The markers are in fairly good shape and can easily be read. From the inscriptions we can see that some prominent people of Stephen City are buried there. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In Memory of Lewis Emmett Who died in peace June 12th 1836 Aged 59 years In Memory of James Watson born Sept. 25th 1781 & died March 25th 1830 aged 49 years & 6 months In Memory of Revd. Elisha Phelps Who departed this life Mar. 12th 1815 Forever with the Lord In Memory of Samuel W. Watson born April 3rd 1814 & died Aug. 10th 1835 aged 21 years 4 months & 7 days Sacred to the memory of Emily C. (consort of Leonard Myers) Who departed this life January 14th 1839 in the 42nd year of her age In memory of Alfred J. Watson born Jany. 6th. 1818 who was stricken by lightning July 19th 1847 in the 29th year of his age How loved, how honored once, avails thee not To whom related or by whom begot. A heap of dust alone remains of thee; Tis all thou art, tis all the great shall be. In Memory of Robert Widdows who was born 1794 and departed this life Jan. 8th 1845 In Memory of Ann Widdows Wife of Robert Widdows born Feby. 10th 1793 and died Decr. 24th 1834 Aged 41 years 10 months & 14 days Who can find a virtuous woman, for her price is far above rubies. Steel Who departed this life June 17th 1840 in the 29th year of his age Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord Armanell Daughter of Samuel & Mary Beaty Died Jan. 14th, 1839 Aged 9 years Mary Beaty Daughter of Thomas and Sarah Steele Died Oct’r 7th 1832 Aged 40 years In Memory of Sarah wife of Thomas Steele Died August 22nd 1824 Aged 76 years Sarah Daughter of Thomas and Sarah Steele Died August 3rd 1856 Aged 73 Years Sacred to the memory of Jane Graham Daughter of John & Elizabeth Graham of Dumfries, Virginia Born March 23d, 1768 died April 11th 1834 aged 66 years and 19 days She died as she lived a firm believer in Christ. Thou art gone to the grave but we will not deplore thee Tho sorrow and darkness encompass thy tomb Thy Saviour has passed thro its portal before thee And the light of his love was thy lamp thro its gloom. Sacred to the memory of Docr. John B. Tilden Who served his country during the revolutionary war as Capt. was a minister of the gospel upwards of 40 years, born in Phila. the 9th December 1762 & departed this life 21st July 1838 in the full prospect of eternal glory aged 76 years Sacred to the memory of Jane Wife of Docr. J. B. Tilden born 18th December 1765 & departed this life May 26th 1827 The most affectionate Mother kind to the poor and a devoted Christian Sacred to the memory of Anna Bell Mother of Docr. John B.
